Order Concerns Higher : ▫Coherency ▫Structured Argument ▫Supporting Evidence ▫Audience Lower: ▫Sentence Structure ▫Grammar

What to focus on… The overall rhetorical structure of the student’s argument. If the student insists on grammatical help, meet the student halfway by addressing some of the higher-level concerns first and, after resolving some of those issues, begin to address the lower- level concerns.

Commenting With ESL students, be as clear and concise with comments as possible. Try to stay away from coding when possible. Provide a full description of errors made rather than relying on error abbreviations.

Suggestions for Additional Help Reading aloud ▫Helps familiarize student with English ▫Helps catch errors

Handouts At the front, the University Writing Center (UWC) has two different binders full of helpful handouts that tutors are free to use and give to their appointments.

Extra Assistance All ESL or ESOL students are allotted one-hour appointments in the UWC, if desired. If you identify an ESL student through recognizable errors in his/her writing, feel free to inform the student of his/her ability to receive more time.
