The good news  If you are all caught up and submit your teacher draft on time this Friday, you don’t have to come in early any mornings other than when required by the school!  Enjoy sleeping in!

The bad news  IF you do not get your rough draft in on time, you will be expected to arrive at 7:45 Monday for mandatory study hall time. Check in to Art 3, and bring your own device to work with if possible.  I won’t be present, but the supervising teachers will monitor your attendance  You’ll be required to attend those study hall times until you have submitted your teacher draft to me  Failure to attend will result in a detention referral!

Plan for the week  Today: Lots of editing! Focused self-evaluation  Make edits tonight if you have time so your peers have an updated draft to work with tomorrow  Tuesday: Peer editing day  Wednesday-Friday: In Lab 100 for revision work time  Remember- Your updated teacher draft will be turned in by the end of conference period Friday in this order: SRP Rubric (open side up) RD #2 Works Cited and Word Count RD#1 turnitin.com submission (RD#2 only)  If you’re proficient (or higher) in all categories at this stage, you get bonus late passes AND you can choose to call this draft your final!!

Today’s Editing Goals  Evaluate topic sentences  Check for transition phrases both between paragraphs and within paragraphs  Address any issues with in-text citations and Works Cited  Catch any “easy” mistakes in editing

Thesis statement and topic sentence  Underline your thesis statement. Example: The surge in invasive species in the Northwest is devastating local populations of animals and plant life, causing ecological and economic damage.  Using one color of highlighter, mark every topic sentence.  Label each topic sentence as either a “F”act or an “O”pinion Example: (F) Another alien species invading waterways is the grass carp.

Next-  Next to each topic sentence, write a short explanation of how this paragraph is connected back to your thesis. How is it supporting the claim(s) you made in your thesis statement?  (if you really can’t figure it out, write, “not sure”…but know that if you can’t make a connection, there’s an issue with organization and/or ideas and content) __________________________________________ (F) Another alien species invading waterways is the grass carp. *this supports there are lots of different invasive species

Big questions to ask yourself  All your topic sentences should be opinions. These are the claims you’re making that support your thesis. Use statements of fact to support your claims.  How can you change things around to make that happen?  Too many facts? You might be writing a report!  Does each topic sentence connect clearly to your thesis? In other words, does each paragraph develop an idea that’s covered by your thesis?  Yes? Good. It should.  No? Maybe your thesis is too narrow. Broaden it.  No? Maybe your paragraph is unrelated or random. Cut it.

Check for transitions  In each of your topic sentences, underline the transition phrase.  Within each paragraph, highlight in a different color any transition phrases used.

Big questions to ask yourself  Did you use transition phrases between paragraphs?  If yes, woo hoo! But, are you being too simplistic? Avoid “First,” “Second,” kind of wording (check out the blog for transition help) Connect ideas with references to specific content instead  If no, why not? Is it too hard to think of a good transition? Then consider whether or not the whole paragraph is out of order. Did you just forget? Do it.

Checking citations  Using a different color of highlighter, mark every in-text citation you put in your paper.  Match those to your Works Cited Count up the number of times you used each individual source, and write that number next to the citation on your Works Cited Nothing should be in your paper that’s not on your WC, and nothing should be on your WC that’s not in your paper! **Updated rule- If you are referring to the author in the sentence, you DO NOT need an additional parenthetical citation at the end of the sentence (assuming no page number is given…if given, use it! )

Big questions to ask yourself  Have you used at least six sources in your paper?!  How evenly are those used? Balance matters!  Double check- you did title this Works Cited, right?  You don’t have more than 50% of your sources from free websites, correct?

Finally-  Read through your own paper and fix any quick mistakes you notice with spelling, grammar, or punctuation. Chances are, you’ll catch some of those “basic” spelling and grammar things on the second reading.  As you read or when you finish, complete the top part only of the “Yes Test” paper

Wrap Up  What did you learn today about your paper?
