Turning note cards… …into an outline

Step #1 1. Make a source card for your interview Last name, First name. Personal/Phone/Email Interview. 8 November 2011. 2. Choose 2-4 answers that you will want to use in your essay. 3. To cite, just do their last name. * These can count towards the cards due Monday.

Step #2 Do you have a source card for all sources now? You should have at least 4: 1. Book 2. Online 3. Interview 4. Any others…more books, more websites…

Step #3 Excluding the source cards, make three piles. 1. problem/issue 2. What did your catalyst do? What are they doing? 3. outcome/effect/change? The piles do not have to have the exact same number of cards, but they should be close.

Step #4 For each pile: 1. Group the cards into threes (three quotes in a body paragraph) 2. Decide the order of the quotes (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd ) 3. Will you use a direct quote or paraphrase it? So…on each card, you will write - Body Paragraph # - 1 st,2 nd or 3 rd - Direct or paraphrase * You will have 6-7 body paragraphs (you will use 18-21 of the quotes that you have)

Step #5 Pull out the cards that you do not think you will use. They might be duplicates or they simply might not fit with anything else. Label them as extras. Do not get rid of them yet. You may change your mind!
