ZEPHANIAH The Savior’s Summons to Satisfaction Jason S. DeRouchie, PhD Associate Professor of OT and Biblical Theology Bethlehem College & Seminary www.derouchie-meyer.org Bethlehem Baptist Church, Fall 2015

Overlap of the Ages

Stage 2 of the Savior’s Summons to Satisfaction OVERVIEW OF 3:8–20: o The Charge to Wait for the Lord (3:8a) o The Dual Basis of the Charge to the Wait (3:8b–10) o The Ultimate Motivation of the Charge to Wait (3:11–20) The promise that the Lord will not put Jerusalem to shame (3:11–13) A parenthetical call to rejoice in salvation (3:14–15) The promise that the Lord will bring consummate salvation (3:16–20)

A Parenthetical Call to Rejoice in Salvation (3:14–15) The need to rejoice (3:14) Two reasons to rejoice (3:15) o Reason 1: What the Lord has done (15ab)

A Parenthetical Call to Rejoice in Salvation (3:14–15) The need to rejoice (3:14) Two reasons to rejoice (3:15) o Reason 1: What the Lord has done (15ab)–– We are saved from judgments and enemies. o Reason 2: Where the Lord is and what it means (15cd)

A Parenthetical Call to Rejoice in Salvation (3:14–15) The need to rejoice (3:14) Two reasons to rejoice (3:15) o Reason 1: What the Lord has done (15ab)–– We are saved from judgments and enemies. o Reason 2: Where the Lord is and what it means (15cd)––The savior is with us so we need not fear.

The Question of Timing o Salvation is future for Zephaniah: e.g., 1:7; 2:2; 3:8, 11. o Here desire births delight: “The certainty of future joy after the day of the Lord births present joy amidst pain. The very joy for which the remnant aimed would become a joy that would sustain” (DeRouchie, Zephaniah).

Heb 12:1–3 Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

Hab 3:17–19 Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. 19 GOD, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer’s; he makes me tread on my high places.

Rom 5:2–5 We rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Zeph 3:14–15John 12:13–15Zech 9:9 Call to Joy & Fulfill- ment 14 Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem! 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Reason to Rejoice 15 The LORD has taken away the judgments against you; he has cleared away your enemies. The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Encouraged not to fear you shall never again fear evil. 15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!”

Takeaway King Jesus is Zephaniah’s King Yahweh o Zephaniah sees Yahweh as deliverer. o Zechariah sees Yahweh working through a human deliverer. Zech 9:9: Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. o For John, Jesus is performing Yahweh’s role. John 12:15: Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!

Zephaniah’s remnant from the nations corresponds to Jesus’s saving the world. o John sees Jesus coming for a group larger than the Jews. He leave’s out “ to you ” from Zech 9:9. o John 12:15. Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt! o Zech 9:9. Behold, your king is coming to you ; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Zephaniah’s remnant from the nations corresponds to Jesus’s saving the world. o John sees Jesus coming for a group larger than the Jews. He leave’s out “ to you ” from Zech 9:9. The Pharisees response to the triumphal entry was, “Look, the whole world has gone after him” (John 12:19; cf. 3:16). The Greeks see Jesus: “Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip … and asked, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus’” (John 12:20–21).

King Jesus is Zephaniah’s warrior deliverer, who will save from the enemy judgments. o The crowd’s “Hosanna” is a cry for salvation (John 12:13). o After the king comes in Zech 9:9, he establishes a worldwide rule through force and conquest (9:11–17). o John 12:27–32.

John 12:27–32 [Jesus said,] “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30 Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”

King Jesus’s arrival starts Zephaniah’s day of the Lord Rejoice today in hope; the King has come!

Come Thou Long Expected Jesus Charles Wesley, 1744 Come, Thou long expected Jesus, Born to set Thy people free; From our fears and sins release us; Let us find our rest in Thee. Israel’s strength and consolation, Hope of all the earth Thou art. Dear Desire of every nation, Joy of every longing heart.

Born Thy people to deliver, Born a child and yet a king. Born to reign in us forever, Now Thy gracious kingdom bring. By Thine own eternal Spirit Rule in all our hearts alone; By Thine all sufficient merit, Raise us to Thy glorious throne.
