Liceo Classico “Francesco Petrarca” Our school is situated in the historic center of Arezzo, near Petrarca's House... … and “S. Francesco” church, where Piero della Francesca's paintings can also be found.

Our school is a high grammar school, attended by students from 14 to 19 years old. We study humanistic subjects like Italian literature, History, Philosophy, but also Maths, Physics, modern Languages and Science. The real peculiarity of this school is the study of Latin and ancient Greek: these languages are not spoken anymore, but they are useful to understand the etymology of a lot of modern words and to make you more open minded. After five years we don’t achieve a specific qualification to start working: we have to attend university, but we can choose the faculty we prefer (like medicine, engineering, literature..), so we have a lot of opportunities for our future.. Type of school We go to school from Monday to Saturday: we have to be in our classroom at 8:15 a.m., when the first bell rings, then at 8:20 a.m. a second bell ringing indicates the beginning of the lessons. Our typical morning is divided in 4 or 5 hours, so we usually do 4 or 5 subjects everyday. At the end of each hour we don’t move from one classroom to another: each class has its own room for the whole school year. At 10:30 we have a little break which we can use to eat something, to go to the “loo” (toilette) or to relax. Students of the third, fourth and fifth year finish lessons at 13:30 everyday, whereas students of first and second years leave from school at 12:30 three times a week. We don’t have to come back to school in the afternoon, except to do extra activities A typical day at our school:

We don't wear a uniform at school, we can wear the clothes we want, but shorts are not allowed. When we have physical education instead we have to wear tracksuits and trainers.

Among the extracurricular activities, offered by the school, there is Drama. Students who decide to take part of this group have several meetings during the year and prepare a show that will be performed in front of other students and parents at the end of the year.

Another interesting thing is the school newspaper “Dedalus” where all the students can write articles about music, art or literature, and we can also write our opinions. Moreover we have the cineforum where the students can watch movies and after that they can talk about what they have seen and they can express their considerations. We can also improve our knowledge of modern languages with the afternoon classes of English, French or Chinese, Spanish and German.

In the chemistry lab analysis under the microscope and experiments are usually carried out. When we are there, there are the Biology teacher and the laboratory technician who helps us with the equipment. There are also some classes that are used like laboratories: The English’s laboratory has 28 headphones and a projector and Internet Connection, so it's possibile to do listening activities, to watch movies or to have interactive lessons. Headphones are also useful for understand better what the teacher says and improve pronunciation.

A school assembly is a day which is completely dedicated to the students: on these days, once a month, there are no lesson! Every month ( except in June and September) there are 5 hours to take advantage of this opportunity. During school assembly we organise different activities: We watch movies, and we discuss them. Movies are chosen according to the period, or historic events, or current issues. After viewing, we can talk about the message that the film wants to communicate to the audience and we can also analyse the film themes. We can listen to politicians of our city, who talk about problems or projects, related to ecology, events, actuality. There are also some study groups, where students can revise or do their homework if they prefer to focus on their schoolwork and tests, instead of partecipating in the assembly. Sometimes a music group is organised. This is the best part, because it’s a pleasant experience. It's relaxing, and it’s also great fun. School assemblies are important because they are useful to learn something new in a different way and spend time with teachers and other students out of class.

Hope you have enjoyed it!
