The Unequal Distribution of Natural Resources Francisci WG.7(b)

Technologies that have Created Demand for Resources: Steam Engine: Heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam; Increased the demand for coal (1600s) Computer Chips: small electronic circuits used to transmit data signals; Increased demand for skilled labor (1970s) Internal Combustion Engine: is an engine where the combustion of a fuel occurs with air; Increased demand for trucks/cars and created a demand for gasoline – oil (1860-1920)

Unequal Distribution? Natural Resources not evenly distributed on Earth Some countries are more abundant when it comes to natural resources While one country may be rich in oil, it may have little water reserves Another country may be rich in water reserves, but poor in oil

What Effects have Unequal Distribution of Resources had on Earth? Interdependence: Nations must trade for resources they do not have; Global trade market exists to import & export goods. Economic Development: Many nations rich in natural resources are wealthy (developed) which many nations lacking natural resources are poor (developing).

What Effects have Unequal Distribution of Resources had on Earth? Energy: Energy producers are wealthy (developed) oil nations; Energy consumers are countries lacking energy sources and must trade and are often poor countries Conflict over Resources: Countries lacking natural resources will often fight for land to obtain the natural resources (ex. Middle East – Water resources & oil reserves)

What Effects have Unequal Distribution of Resources had on Earth? Imperialism: When a country rules over another country; European countries imperialized the continent of Africa during 1800s and controlled the resources in Africa to help fuel the Industrial Revolution in Europe.

How do countries decide what to produce? Economic Development Opportunities: Each country must decide what area of its must be strengthened first (Ex. Infrastructure, educational buildings, etc.)

How do countries decide what to produce? Environmental Conservation Priorities: A country must decide how it will balance industry with protecting the environment (Ex. Preserving forests, water, land, etc.)

How do countries decide what to produce? Priorities of Indigenous Minorities: A country must determine how to protect the original inhabitants of the land while trying to advance economically; (Ex. Protecting Aborigines of Australia, Native Americans of the United States, Maori of New Zealand).

What are the costs (effects) of using Natural Resources? Resource depletion Environmental degradation Health problems

What are the benefits of using Natural Resources? Production of goods and services Employment Opportunities Development of Technologies
