Clarification of Pump Orders from Barbara Davis Center Diabetes Resource Nurse Winter/Spring 2013

Example of an update to insulin orders during the school year – See Handout

Pump Order: Basal Rates Pump Insulin Dosing Orders (Insuin-toCarb Ratios and High BG Correction) Bolus for carbohydrates should occur immediately before lunch BDC Insulin Pump: Active Insulin Curve: 3 Standard Start TimeUnits per Hour 000.2 020.2 210.25 Total:4.95 Note: This area indicates the pump basal settings – to be managed by parent.

Pump Orders: Carbohydrate Dose Carbohydrate Bolus TimeRatio 0020 1030 Indicates that from midnight to 10am the carbohydrate bolus is 1 unit of Insulin to 20gms of carbs and from 10am to midnight the ratio is 1unit for every 30gms of carbohydrates

Pump Orders: Insulin Correction Correction Bolus TimeSensitivity 00120 Indicates that for every 1 unit of insulin the student’s blood glucose will drop 120 mg/dl. This would then be the correction factor to use if the pump malfunctioned and insulin needed to be given by syringe or insulin pen. Ex: BG 240, would give 1 unit to drop BG to target range of 120.

Pump Orders: Target Ranges Targets TimeRange 00120-150 07100-120 21120-150 Indicates Target Ranges: for example from 7am to 9pm, the target range is 120-150
