2 What is scientific notation? Scientific notation is a way of rewriting large or small numbers so that you have one digit in the one’s place multiplied by some power of ten.

3 Describe the steps of rewriting a large number in scientific notation. Step 1: Move the decimal left, so that only one digit is in front of the decimal. Step 2: Multiply that number by a power of ten. (The exponent is how many times you had to move the decimal.)

4 Example 1: Write each number in scientific notation. (A)700,000 * move the decimal 7.0 * multiply by a power of ten 7.0 x 10 5 (The exponent is 5 because we moved the decimal 5 places.)

5 Example 1: Write each number in scientific notation. (B) 8,296,000 * move the decimal 8.296 * multiply by a power of ten 8.296 x 10 6 (The exponent is 6 because we moved the decimal 6 places.)

6 Example 1: Write each number in scientific notation. (C) 58,000 * move the decimal 5.8 * multiply by a power of ten 5.8 x 10 4 (The exponent is 4 because we moved the decimal 4 places.)

7 Example 2: Write each number in standard form. (A) 8.753 x 10 2 * move the decimal right the number of the exponent 875.3

9 Example 2: Write each number in standard form. (C) 2.001 x 10 1 * move the decimal right the number of the exponent 20.01
