1 St Kilda – A Ghost Island Key Questions: What happened to the community of St Kilda? What does it mean when a whole community has gone?

2 Learning Objective: To develop knowledge and understanding of a community that once was strong, but has now been abandoned.

3 STARTER In a spider diagram recap from last lesson all the reasons why a family may which to leave the Hebrides and the island of Canna.

4 Main Task Watch the following documentary about St Kilda, Hebrides. Identify all the reasons why people left St Kilda. Identify the main reasons the community finally abandoned the island in 1930. At its peak over 180 people lived on the island.

5 Main Task: Assessed Task Write a diary account for one day in the life of a person living on St Kilda. What were the challenges and rewards.

6 Plenary Peer assess the diary account of the person sat next to you. Give two stars and a wish explaining what they did well and what they need to do to improve their work.
