Color and Emotion September 28-October 2, 2015

Warm Up: Day One At the top of your page, write “Color and Mood.” Divide your page in half with a horizontal line. Divide the upper part of your page with a vertical line.

Warm Up: Day One On the bottom half of your page, write the following colors: 1. Red 2. Orange 3. Yellow 4. Green 5. Blue 6. Purple 7. Brown 8. Black 9. Grey 10. White

Today’s Assignment Look at the paintings on this website: http://www.artyfactory.com/color_theor y/color_theory_2.htm http://www.artyfactory.com/color_theor y/color_theory_2.htm What feelings or moods are created by these paintings? Write the feelings beside each word in your warm up.

Today’s Assignment This week, you will create an “opposite picture.” You will draw something that creates one mood (something happy, sad, stressful, etc.) You will then use pastels to color it in shades and tints of the opposite “mood” color. For example: If you draw something very happy and energetic, you will color it in blue or grey.

Practice On the paper, use the side of the blue soft pastel to fill in the whole page. Go over it with the side of the white pastel. Blend the two together. In the middle of your picture, draw a black horizontal line. Smudge the black downwards on your paper. In the upper left corner, draw a black circle. Make your black lines thin.

Practice Fill in the circle with white. Smudge the white and black together. This will make a blue-grey circle. Underneath the circle, below the black horizon line, draw a zig-zag of white that travels to the bottom of the page. Fill in the bottom right corner with dark blue. Stipple the blue with black around the edges.

Practice Use the white pastel to draw a cloud. Use the side of the blue pastel to darken the area around the cloud. Smudge outward. Add a few random black streaks to the water to add texture. You have now drawn a sad beach scene.  What would happen if you drew the same scene adding more reds, yellows, and browns?

Clean Up Everyone: Return the pastels to the tray. Supplies: Put the trays back on the shelf. Trash: Make a lap around the table with the trash can. Make sure everyone throws away wipes and paper towels. Group One: Line up the sinks and wash up. Group Two: Go to the restroom to wash up. Make sure you don’t leave a mess around the public sinks!

Clean Up Continued… Once Group One is seated, Group Three line up at the sinks and clean up. Once Group Two is seated, Group Four may go to the restroom to clean up. Everyone—Take a wipe and wash the table of any excess chalky dust.

Today’s Assignment Today, you will draw a picture that creates a mood… for example, it may be something happy, sad, or scary. You may use your devices for reference, but they must be visible on the table. No texting! Your drawing must fill the page, and it must have at least four elements. For example—in the landscape we drew yesterday, we had a horizon, a moon, a cloud, and a beach.

Clean Up Supplies and Keepers: Take up supplies and organize them on the counter. Make sure the counter area is clean. Trash: Make a lap around the table. Empty trash can in the white bin. Group One: If needed, go to the bathroom to wash your hands. Group Three will follow. Group Two: If needed, go to the sink to wash your hands. Group Four will follow.

Warm Up: Day Three On the bottom half of your notes, write: 1. Hue— 2. Tint— 3. Shade— Watch the video at

Today’s Assignment Today, we are going to choose a main color for our mood drawing. If your drawing is energetic and happy, what would be a good OPPOSITE color? If your drawing is very serious, what would be a good OPPOSITE color? Take a look at the sample painting… what is the mood?

Today’s Assignment When you choose your color, you will stick to tints and shades of that color. For example, if you drew a rainbow, you would not use normal rainbow colors…you would just color it in different tints and shades of blue. You may use soft pastels, oil pastels, colored pencils, or a mixture of the three. What would be best for your composition?

Clean Up Supplies and Keepers: Take up supplies and organize them on the counter. Make sure the counter area is clean. Trash: Make a lap around the table. Empty trash can in the white bin. Group One: If needed, go to the bathroom to wash your hands. Group Three will follow. Group Two: If needed, go to the sink to wash your hands. Group Four will follow.

Warm Up: Day Four In the upper left corner, write the name “Mark Rothko (1903-1970).” 1. Artist during the __________ century. 2. He is associated with the ___________________________ movement, a group that focused on using bold color to create emotion. 3. He believed that color could express “big” emotions like tragedy or doom.

Today’s Assignment Watch the short video on Mark Rothko from Discovery Education. Tough question—why do you think people attach so much feeling to color? Today, we will continue our “opposite drawing.” How does color affect the way we feel when we look at this drawing?

Clean Up Supplies and Keepers: Take up supplies and organize them on the counter. Make sure the counter area is clean. Trash: Make a lap around the table. Empty trash can in the white bin. Group One: If needed, go to the bathroom to wash your hands. Group Three will follow. Group Two: If needed, go to the sink to wash your hands. Group Four will follow.

Day 5: Warm Up Double check your notes. Make sure you have everything for this week. Today, while you work, I will walk around with my grade book and check this week’s notes for a participation grade. Please keep your notes on hand while you work on today’s assignment.
