C-5.01 - Infant care6 When it is time for a change, or when it is time for a feeding, what do you as my caregiver need to do? This a very important procedure.

C-5.01 - Infant care7 BEFORE FEEDING OR DIAPERING Lather and scrub Rub for 15 seconds Wash all areas of hands front and back Rinse for 10 seconds Dry with paper towel or drying device Turn off faucet with paper towel I am watching you. What do you do before you start to feed or change?

C-5.01 - Infant care10 1.Immediately label and refrigerate breast or formula bottles of milk.

C-5.01 - Infant care11 2. Discard any formula or breast milk that has not been refrigerated for two hours. Time for step 2! What is it? I will give you a hint. You forgot to put the milk in the refrigerator. What do you do?

C-5.01 - Infant care12 3. Remove bottle from refrigerator and run warm water over the bottle to bring to room temperature. Step 3 My sister does not like her milk cold so…..

C-5.01 - Infant care13 4. Hold baby during bottle feeding. When baby gets bigger and can hold his/her own bottle, it’s okay to put baby in an age-appropriate seating device and give bottle. 5. Watch for signs of fullness.  Crying in response to bottle  Turning head away  Closing mouth tightly  Pushing away bottle/breast  Stopping sucking

C-5.01 - Infant care14 7. After one hour, discard any used formula left in the bottle. I am going to be really mad if you don’t do this last step. I do not want to get sick! Okay, name it.

C-5.01 - Infant care15 There is a strange smell in this school and it is time for a new procedure. It is the last thing you need to do. Hint! This procedure is done on demand, not on a schedule. Did you guess? Diapering

C-5.01 - Infant care16 I am out of here. My Mama is going to show you the rest of the procedure. She is my expert. See ya!!!!!

C-5.01 - Infant care17 This is my beautiful family. Dada, Mama, Eli and me. Mama will do the stinky stuff! Remember she is the expert. Dada can change diapers, too.

C-5.01 - Infant care18 Hello, caregivers. What do you think you should do first and second? 1. Gather supplies before placing child on diapering surface 2. Don disposable gloves if needed

C-5.01 - Infant care19 4.Dispose gloves, soiled towelettes, and diaper in a plastic-lined, covered receptacle 3. Use disposable towelette or moistened paper towel to clean child, wiping front to back.

C-5.01 - Infant care20 5. Wipe hands with disposable towelette or moistened paper towel.

C-5.01 - Infant care21 6. Slide a clean diaper under the child, applying diapering products if needed, using facial or toilet paper, discarding tissue in a plastic-lined, covered receptacle.

C-5.01 - Infant care22 Expose of all soiled items in a plastic lined trashcan.

C-5.01 - Infant care23 Diapering - Note Avoid baby powder, ointments, and other products unless instructed in writing by a parent. If ingested, baby powder can harm the lungs of an infant.

C-5.01 - Infant care24 Check for signs of diaper rash. If needed, and if you have written parent permission, apply ointment.

C-5.01 - Infant care25 7. Fasten diaper and place clothing on child.

C-5.01 - Infant care26 8. Wash child’s hands in accordance with Rule.2803. If child is unable to support his/her head, clean the child’s hands with a disposable towelette or moistened paper towel, then dry the child’s hands and return the child to a supervised area. 9. Spray entire diapering surface with detergent solution and wipe clean; use disposable paper towels. 10. Spray diapering surface with disinfecting solution and allow to remain on surface two minutes or as specified by the manufacturer, or air-dry. 11. Wash hands in accordance with Rule.2803, even if disposable gloves are used by the caregiver.

C-5.01 - Infant care27 I have to get out of here because I know what is coming next! But what do you have to do after you change that diaper? Think really hard!!!!!!

C-5.01 - Infant care28 Do you have any idea what the next procedure could be? Dada and I like to do this, too. Naptime

C-5.01 - Infant care29 1. Schedule naps with parent preferences in mind. Stagger naptimes to meet the individual needs of infants under your care. Naptime is like having a garden. There are some procedures you have to follow so it will grow and bear fruit. First, you have to find out from the parents what their preferences are for baby’s naptimes. Does Eli take a nap at home? What time does Eli go to bed? Tonight, Mama and Dada are taking us out to eat, so they what us both to take a nap. Click your mouse and check out the first procedure for naptimes.

C-5.01 - Infant care30 2. Use music and stories to calm infants before naptime. 3. If feeding is needed before naptime, hold infants to feed them their pre-nap bottles.

C-5.01 - Infant care31 3. Put infant in crib. For safety reasons, it’s never okay to prop an infant’s bottle or give it to them while they are lying down. After she falls to sleep what are you going to do with her? Should you leave her on the couch?

C-5.01 - Infant care32 4. To reduce risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), place infant on his/her back in a crib with a firm mattress, avoiding use of fluffy animals, pillows, and other objects in the crib. Only place a child in an alternative sleep position if a physician’s recommendation for a sleep position waiver is on file in the center.

C-5.01 - Infant care33 What is SIDS? Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

C-5.01 - Infant care34 See how beautiful and happy E-I is now that you have taken care of her. Thanks for the help. I am off to the Golf Club. See ya!

C-5.01 - Infant care35 Remember: You are trusted with our future!!
