Definition : of Bread and Circus In Roman times Bread and Circus was the idea that if the public was supplied with enough bread or food and entertainment then there would be less of a chance of rebellion or real worry over real government issues. This was a way to control the public. Today much of the same methods are used to keeps the public happy and under control.

Rome The U.S Chariot races Gladiator fights Feeding people to lions Free Grain Sports Movies Television shows Music Soup kitchens

Why Rome Collapsed: The collapse of Rome was brought on by many poor government decisions. Became to large. Not enough control. Its resources was spared too thin. Its Republic became a dictatorship with lead to corruption.

Rome’s Collapse compared to U.S Like Rome today the U.S and it’s resources have been spread to thin. Its military is spread all over the world. Resources and man power have been over used. Bad government decisions have caused our economy to go down hill.

American Bread and Circus In February of 2008, President Obama was pushed off of the most searched list on Google and was replaced by the "Best and Worst Dressed of the Academy Awards". During March and April when The Office and Rock of Love came back on TV for new seasons, and both of the premiers topped Clinton and McCain throughout the Spring season. In April, the search for Miley Cyrus's Vanity Fair photos were the most searched, topping Obama's nomination for presidency a few weeks later.

Entertainment and the Government Entertainment also makes us look at our government in a different way. Movies such as Syriana, Rendition, In the Valley of Elah and this year's Eagle Eye and Body of Lies tell stories that portray the government as threatening.

Is the U.S following in Rome’s footsteps The U.S is definitely following in Rome’s foot steps, because like Rome the U.S has become a huge empire and with this comes many challenges such as enforcing laws and the over use of resources. Also like Rome the U.S has spread it’s military to thin trying to patrol the whole world.
