3  Below an elevation of about 9,500 feet  Etna is a shield volcano  The upper1,200 feet is a stratovolcano and its made of several coalesced vents.

4  The most dramatic eruptions of Etna was in 1669.  Earthquakes began on February 25 th and caused great damage in Nicolosi, about 6 miles south & east of Catania  The eruption began on March 11 th as a 7 mile fissure opened  Several more vents formed  On April 12 th flows arrived at the walls of Catania.  Lava rose to the top of the wall and went over

5  Lava also knocked over a section of the wall 120 feet of it.  The city of Catania was completely destroyed  Lava reached the sea on April 23 rd  The eruption stopped on July 15 th

6 Mt. Etna involves the Eurasian plate and African plate. These are converging plates.

7 Etna has a history of at least 190 times that it has erupted. The largest eruption was in 1991 it continued until March 30, 1993. It was the largest in 300 years. Etna started erupting in –1500 B.C.

8 Mt. Etna is currently active. Its has been this way for over a million years. Dormant Periods on Mount Etna are very rare. Southern flank of Etna erupting.

9 Mt. Etna’s eruptions are mostly silent, but some have clicking sounds like glass rubbing glass.
