Safety In the Science Lab Rules and Symbols Lab Safety: Everyone Is Responsible! Ms. Lilian Albarico Nanchang No. 2 High School 2012-2013

Safety First Science is a hands-on laboratory class. You will be doing many laboratory activities, which require the use of hazardous chemicals and expensive lab equipment. Safety in the science classroom is the #1 priority. To ensure a safe science classroom, a list of rules has been developed and provided to you in your student safety contract. These rules must be followed at all times. A signed lab safety contract is required to participate in labs.

General Safety Guidelines Be Responsible at All Times. No horseplay, practical jokes, pranks, etc. Follow all instructions carefully. Do not touch any lab equipment until instructed to do so. Food, drink, and gum are not allowed in the science classroom. Lab Safety: Everyone Is Responsible!

General Safety Guidelines Keep the science room clean and organized. Lab Safety: Everyone Is Responsible! Notify the teacher immediately of any accidents or unsafe conditions in the science classroom! Wash your hands with soap and water after experiments.

Safety Behavior

Don’t work alone in the lab! In case of a problem, you may need another person to prevent injury or even save your life!

Remember that the lab is a place for serious work! Careless behavior may endanger yourself and others and will not be tolerated!

Demonstrate safe behavior! Obey all safety instructions. Clean up spills immediately; IF you know how. If you are uncertain how to clean up a spill or if a large spill occurs, notify your teacher in accordance to the emergency procedure.

Report any accidents or unsafe conditions immediately!

What To Do In An Emergency If there is a fire or fire alarm Quietly get up and push in your chair. Walk toward the outside classroom door. Walk to the basketball court. Quickly line up in alphabetical order by last name. Remain in line until the drill is over. Remain silent throughout the entire alarm so that all people can hear important directions. Lab Safety: Everyone Is Responsible!

Know how to respond to an emergency. SCC Office Campus Safety Fire Department Hospital Police

Clothing Preference

Wear appropriate protective clothing! Your clothing should cover your legs to the knees – shorts are not appropriate for the laboratory. Lab aprons can be used to protect good clothing. Loose clothing should not be worn because it may dip into chemicals or fall into a flame and catch fire.

Wear shoes that cover your feet. Sandals and open- toed shoes do not protect your feet from broken glass that is frequently found in the lab. Also, leather shoes protect your feet from chemical spills – canvas shoes do not.

Do not apply cosmetics, eat, or drink in the lab. These activities are ways by which you can accidentally ingest harmful chemicals.

Tie Back Loose Hair Dangling hair can fall into the Bunsen burner and catch fire or can fall into a chemical solution P.S. Burning hair REALLY STINKS!

Safety Manuals

Know the safety equipment! Eye wash fountain Safety shower Fire extinguisher Emergency exits

Know how to use the safety equipment! Eye wash Fountain Safety Shower Fire extinguisher Emergency Exit

Safety Symbols Chemical Safety Read all labels twice before removing a chemical from the container. Never touch, taste, or smell a chemical unless instructed by the teacher. Transfer chemicals carefully! Hand Safety If a chemical spills on your skin, notify the teacher and rinse with water for 15 minutes. Carry glassware carefully. Plant Safety Do not eat any plants in lab. Wash your hands after handling plants.

Wear safety goggles when working with chemicals, flames, or heating devices. If a chemical gets in your eye, flush in water for 15 minutes and notify the teacher. Safety Symbols Eye Protection Sharp Objects When using knifes or other sharp objects always walk with the points facing down. Cut away from fingers and body. Electrical Safety Do not place a cord where someone can trip over it. Never use electricity around water. Unplug all equipment before leaving the room.

Safety Symbols Animal Safety Only handle living organisms with teacher permission. Always treat living organisms humanely. Wash your hands after handling animals. Heating Safety Tie back hair and loose clothes when working with open flames. Never look into a container as you are heating it. Heated metal and glass looks cool, use tongs or gloves before handling. Never leave a heat source unattended.

Safety Equipment Fire Extinguisher – Located in outside classroom door and in the computer lab To operate the fire extinguisher remember P-A-S-S P- Pull the Pin A-Aim the hose at the base of the fire from 5-6 feet away. S-Squeeze the handle. S-Sweep the hose back and forth across the fire. REMEMBER: Stop, Drop, & RollOn Fire?

Chemical Safety

Do not taste any chemical!

Hold your hand over the label while pouring.

Pour from large containers to smaller ones.

Always ADD ACID to water acid water “Do not spit into acid!” – a good phrase to remember this rule.

Know how to dispose of waste. Dispose of all waste materials according to your instructional ? ? ? ?

Do not smell any chemicals directly! If absolutely necessary to smell, use your hand to fan the vapor to your nose.

Know the hazards of the materials being used. Read and reread labels carefully to make sure that you are using the right chemical.

Handling Equipments

Check glassware for stars or cracks.

Heat test tubes at an angle, directing the opening oppositely to you and other people in the laboratory.

Handle hot glassware with gloves or beaker tongs.

Never remove chemicals from the laboratory. This guy put chemicals in his locker!

Do not pipet solutions by mouth! Use a rubber suction bulb or other device to fill a pipet.

First light the match THEN Turn on the gas!

Before leaving the lab…

Wash your hands with soap and water before leaving. This rule applies even if you have been wearing gloves!

Before leaving the lab: –Return equipment and chemicals to their proper places. –Be sure to replace the lids to all containers. –Clean up your work area.

Reflection

What’s Wrong With This Picture?

What’s Wrong With These Statements? Hal says that his teacher is solely responsible for preventing laboratory accidents. Keshia started the lab activity before reading it through completely. Ricardo decided to do a lab activity that he read about in a library book before the teacher came into the classroom. Stephanie says that the safety goggles mess up her hair and give her raccoon eyes. She refuses to wear them. Barbie and Ken accidentally break a beaker full of some chemical. Instead of risking getting in trouble they quickly clean up the mess with paper towel and throw it in the garbage.

Any Questions? REMEMBER: Carefully read through the entire safety contract and sign. Have your parents read and sign your safety contract. Study for the safety quiz later this week!
