3 Solutions of a Quadratic Equation If b 2 – 4ac > 0, then the quadratic equation has 2 distinct real solutions. Let ax 2 + bx + c = 0, where a = 0. If b 2 – 4ac = 0, then the quadratic equation has 1 real solution. If b 2 – 4ac < 0, then the quadratic equation has 0 real solutions. The expression b 2 – 4ac is called the discriminant.

4 Example 1 Find the discriminant for each equation. Then determine the number of real solutions. a) 3x 2 – 6x + 4 = 0 b 2 – 4ac =(-6) 2 – 4(3)(4) =36 – 48 =-12 no real solutions b) 3x 2 – 6x + 3 = 0 b 2 – 4ac =(-6) 2 – 4(3)(3) =36 – 36 =0 one real solution c) 3x 2 – 6x + 2 = 0 b 2 – 4ac =(-6) 2 – 4(3)(2) =36 – 24 =12 two real solutions

16 Example 3 Multiply. (2 – i)(-3 – 4i) = -6- 8i+ 3i+ 4i 2 = -6- 5i+ 4(-1) = -10 – 5i

17 Conjugate of a Complex Number The conjugate of a complex number a + bi is a – bi. The conjugate of a + bi is denoted a + bi.
