WORK EXPERIENCE 2015 At the end of this presentation you will: Know about the aims of the Work Experience unit Know when the work experience week will happen Know how to get a placement Have a letter and form to take home.

WORK EXPERIENCE AIMS  A qualification! You will achieve a Personal Development unit called Self and Work at N4 or N5.  You will learn some job seeking skills and send a perfect letter and C.V. to your work experience employer  You will get the chance to work alongside adults and do “real” work  Your confidence levels will soar!

WHEN? Your placement week is: Monday 6th June – Friday 10th June 2016 The hours you do will be up to your employer and may be longer (or fewer*) than school hours You will be expected to work the hours stated by your employer

HOW DO I FIND A PLACEMENT? Look at the database of placements… ….if you don’t like the jobs on the database, or don’t get your choice….. Find your own – this is referred to as “self found placement”

USING THE DATABASE…. The database is an online selection of placements available to you. Workit.info There are around 100 local jobs. In January, you will be able to browse and make selections from the database…..or you may like to find your own placement.

FINDING YOUR OWN PLACEMENT If you want to organise your own placement you will have to complete paperwork. Forms will be available from the beginning of February Hand your form to the employer who has agreed to take you. Return the completed form to your SE teacher by Monday 21 st March 2016.

Form, what form? The self found form is vital. It looks like thisthis No-one will be able to go on placement without having returned a signed form from their employer. And the deadline date? Monday 21 st march 2016

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Your placement will then be checked for health and safety – this can take up to 8 weeks. When your placement passes the checks, you will receive a letter with all the details of your placement to take home These details will also appear next to your name on Work it.

NOT RECOMMENDED! Don't use your part time job as a work experience placement – it doesn't count as a new experience. Don't work in the same office/shop etc as one of your parents or carers – relatives shouldn't be your employer or supervisor Very small firms with no other employees are unlikely to have the correct insurance. Hazardous jobs will not pass the checks. You can only work in a primary school you did not attend yourself.

DATABASE OR SELF FOUND???? Database Easy – just a few clicks and very little paperwork Only 70+ places so may not get the placement you want. Already H&S checked Self found You get the placement you want Pupil has to be responsible for paperwork Placement may not pass the H&S checks

SUMMARY Week beginning Jan 18th – access to the database Week ending Jan 29 th – all database jobs allocated. Self found forms will be available from Feb 1st Self found forms are due back by March 21st This gives everyone a chance to look at the database first then make a decision.

ONE LAST THING… Please do not approach employers/companies that are on the database. You can only book these places through the database.

OH, AND FINALLY…. Self found forms are due by… March 21st. Thanks
