2 WHAT YEAR DID THE BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK BECOME AN OFFICIAL NATIONAL PARK? WHY? The Badlands became a national park on November 10, 1978. The South Dakota legislature recognized the area earlier than 1909 as one to be preserved. President Roosevelt founded the Badlands as a national park. 2

6 WHAT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES ARE AFFECTING THE BADLANDS? Visitors come to the Badlands National Park to enjoy great views. Unfortunately, park visitors sometimes see a haze caused by particles in the air. The cause is usually: Visibility is reduced, at times, due to human-caused haze and fine particles of air pollution, including dust. The average natural visual range from about 140 miles (without pollution) to about 90 miles because of pollution at the park The visual range to below 50 miles on high pollution days. QUESTION 3

This is a nice walk. Nice area to sit and relax. This is a short 0.2 mile walk. There is an amazing view. Bring your camera. Amazing view of wild life and land formations. 9 WHAT TYPE OF ROCKS CAN BE FOUND INSIDE THE BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK? Sedimentary rock makes up most of the Badlands National Park. The sedimentary rock was deposited during the late Cretaceous Period (about 67 to 75 million years ago) throughout the Late Eocene (about 34 to 37 million years ago) and Oligocene Epochs (about 26 to 34 million years ago). The oldest formations are at the bottom and the youngest are at the top. Sedimentary rock makes up most of the Badlands National Park. 10 HOW WAS THE BADLANDS FORMED? The Badlands was formed by deposition and erosion. The deposition of sediments began about 69 million years ago when a sea stretched across what is now the Great Plains. After the sea retreated, successive land environments, including rivers and flood plains, continued to deposit sediments. Although the major period of deposition ended about 28 million years ago, significant erosion of the Badlands did not begin until about half a million years ago. The erosion continues to carve the Badlands slopes today. Eventually, the Badlands will completely erode away. QUESTION 7

11 HOW IS THE LAND INSIDE THE BADLANDS CURRENTLY CHANGING? The land is getting dryer. The Badlands only gets about sixteen inches of rainfall per year. There is very little vegetation in the Badlands, and the numbers have been decreasing for a million years. This is changing due to climate changes and weathering. The Badlands gets a lot of flash floods and landslides after their rainstorms. The rock formations throughout the park are getting lots of erosion due to weathering. Storms, lack of plants to hold down soil, wind, sun, and snow are contributing to this as well. 11
