Positive Behavior Support Mt. Dora High School

Our beloved students will soon be here, and some of them may need a little extra attention…

And we all have our own ways of dealing with them.

Arne takes the pledge: “With us not to us.”

 Collective wisdom lifts general awareness.  Preventing problems means less paperwork, more teaching time.  More good days make it fun to go to school here and fun to work here. Staff-led: How we adapt the Positive Behavior Support program is up to us.

Is There a Link Between Curriculum, Instruction and Behavior?

WE TEACH THEM… “If a child doesn’t know how to read…we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to swim…we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to add…we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to drive…we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to behave…we…?” …..teach? …….punish? Can we finish the last sentence as easily as we do the others?

Fact… “Approximately one-half of all classroom time is taken up with activities other than instruction, and discipline problems are responsible for a significant portion of this lost instructional time.” (Cotton 1990)

Time Cost of a Discipline Referral (45 minutes per incident) 1000 Referrals/yr2000 Referrals/yr (11 per Day and Less than 3 per period) Administrator Time 500 Hours1000 Hours Teacher Time250 Hours500 Hours Student Time750 Hours1500 Hours Totals1500 Hours3000 Hours

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is… A positive school-wide culture A plan to reduce negative behaviors A way to increase and reinforce positive behaviors A plan to teach students and staff positive behaviors A way to monitor and track student behavior

PBS is NOT… More “Busy Work” for all of us An additional piece of curriculum to teach

PBS System: For Academics OR Behavior, Principles are the SAME Academics Behavior Response to Intervention

PHILOSOPHICAL SHIFT Educators know that some students DO NOT have the skills and behavior necessary to cope with the many academic and social expectations in school. So ….

We Must Teach Them… Once you have developed classroom expectations, it is not enough to just post the words on the walls of the classroom…. We must teach them to the students!

REMEMBER… Teach Behavior like we teach Academics – When kids are behaving, they are more likely to be learning!
