3. Dill’s Situation Dill leaves his family and runs away to Maycomb. We find him hiding under Scout’s bed waiting for her to help him. What does this tell us about Dill? – What character traits are shown through his actions? Why does Atticus allow him to stay instead of immediately taking him to Miss Rachel?

4. Atticus and the Mob “A mob’s always made up of people” (Lee 210). How did Atticus know they were coming? Why did he choose to stop them? What would have happened had Jem, Scout, and Dill not arrived? Do you think any of the men came out of the situation with thoughts different than it began?

5. Jem’s Resistance Jem refused to leave the situation with the mob even when Atticus was adamant about it. What do we learn about Jem in this situation? Is Atticus truly mad at him or is he proud?

6. The Newspaper Man Aunt Alexandra says at the beginning of chapter 16 that Mr. Braxton Underwood (the newspaper man) despises African-Americans. Why would he have Atticus’ back instead of being a part of the mob? What does he have to gain/lose from this situation?

7. The Crowd Monday morning before the trial was set to begin, many people found their way past the Finch household. Why are they all interested in the case? How can this be related to other readings from this semester?

8. The Courtroom Reverend Sykes finds the children and allows them to follow him to the balcony. How do you think Atticus would respond if he knew his children were witnessing the trial? When the children get to the Balcony, which seats are they given?
