4 Know your destination Essential Question: This tells you where you want to get to. Questions/Key Words These are your stops along the way. Notes, Examples Summary: This is how you know you got there. It’s easier to get to your destination if you know where you are headed. Taking notes without knowing your overall goal is possible, but not as efficient. Cornell Notes is a format that gives structure to your note-taking so you can be more efficient.

5 Essential Question Essential Question: What is a PROPERTY in math, and what are two examples? Questions/Key Words Notes, Examples Summary: Change the topic of the lesson into a general question. Your job for the lesson is to be able to answer the question! This works for reading and/in-class lessons. Simple.

Notes, Examples Summary: This is where you follow along for the main points and/or key vocabulary of the lesson. Try to write it in question format so your brain has a job to do. Later on you will use this column to study!

Notes, Examples Basic building block of math. They are principles that are true for all numbers. Order doesn’t matter in + or X 5 + 7 = 7 + 5 or 5 x 7 = 7 x 5 I can regroup addition or multiplication if I want or need to. (3 + 12 )+ 4 = 3 + (12 + 4) OR (3 x 12 ) x 4 = 3 x (12 x 8) Summary: This is where you answer the questions in your Questions/Key words column. Use specific examples, not vague definitions. If the teacher writes complicated notes on the board, use your phone to take a picture and write yourself a reminder here.

If you can’t, go back and review your notes until you are able to do so. This summary section is the KEY to remembering what you have learned!
