7 7  They tell employees how to do what the policies require.  Company employee procedure manuals are directed at everyone in the company.  Post orders are specific procedure manuals affecting individual departments and directed at department employees. 8 8  Rules serve a function only when they address specific and clearly understood activities.  Rules define exactly what employees must do; no more-no less.  Use rules only when absolutely necessary, overuse of rules causes reduced morale.  Not using rules causes mistakes, injuries, miscommunications, and law suits. 9 9  A major task of the supervisor is to create policies, procedures, rules and post orders.  Once the policies, procedures, rules & post orders have been written they should be reviewed by senior management and/or corporate lawyers. 11 11  Before the policy is implemented relevant information about the policy is included. This information would include but is not limited to: 1. Originating department and implementation date 2. 12 12  Writing policies & procedures may not be the most exciting task a supervisor performs, but it is the most important task.  Planning, writing, reviewing, editing, revising and implementing policy, procedure, and post orders will pay big dividends in the future.
