3 Origins  The term “ghetto” originated from the name of the Jewish quarter in Venice Italy (1516).  WWII-City Districts in Europe  Germans forced them to live in tough conditions. Children eating in the ghetto streets. Warsaw, Poland, between 1940 and 1943.

4 Why Were Ghettos Created?

5 Nazi’s Excuse for Creation  Provisional measure to control and segregate Jews.  The majority of them only lasted a short time.  After the “Final Solution” in 1942 Ghettos were practically empty. Jews move into the Kovno ghetto. Lithuania, ca. 1941-1942.

6 Environment  Most were created in East Germany (Nazi Occupied)  Were outlined with concrete walls and barbed wire.  Were crowded  No sanitation  Running water  Cold snowy conditions  No food A sign, in both German and Latvian, warning that people attempting to cross the fence or to contact inhabitants of the Riga ghetto will be shot. Riga, Latvia, 1941-1943.

7 Warsaw Ghetto  Was the largest  1.3 square miles with 450,000 people

8 Judenraete  Was regulated by a Nazi assigned Jewish counsel (Judenraete).  Issue order; Regulate deportations: Created Jewish Police forces  All crime or problems were blamed on the counsel. Jewish resistance fighters captured by SS troops during the Warsaw ghetto uprising. Warsaw, Poland, April 19-May 16, 1943.
