10 Leeches Until mid 19th century, patients were bled by the use of leeches In 2004, the FDA approved the use of leeches as a medical device Must be limited to when blood needs to be taken from a specific area of tissue Such as when blood needs to be drained from an area surrounded by damaged blood vessels Leeches take blood but also release a chemical that inhibit clotting, increasing blood flow Also numb the area while blood is drawn
