1 CH. 13-SEC. 3 CRISIS AND CONFLICT

2 THE TARIFF OF ABONMINATIONS Jackson’s biggest crisis centered around a tariff passed in 1828. Prices of foreign goods went up and Southern Planters were against it. Southerners gave the protective tariff this nickname. Vice President John Calhoun took up the cause….he favored states rights. Daniel Webster delivers a big speech against states’ rights while others defended the idea of nullification ( the right of a state to declare federal laws illegal). Jackson felt the Union must be preserved…while Calhoun said the liberty of the state is above the Union. Dec. 1832---Calhoun resigns as VP

3 Jackson’s Policy for Native Americans Jackson believes the Indians should give up their lands to settlers. Also believed that they would live more freely in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Tribes affected---Chickasaw, Creek, Seminole, Cherokee and Choctaws 1828-Cherokee Tribe asked the Supreme Court to defend the rights of Indians in the Southeast. Court agreed with the Indians but Jackson ignored the decision. Trail of Tears— Indian Removal Act of 1830- let U.S. remove Native Americans from the eastern U.S. At Gunpoint, Indians signed treaties agreeing to leave lands. Cherokee held out until 1838. Chief John Ross led his people on a long march to Indian Territory. 1/8 of the Cherokee die on trip. Known as “The Trail Where They Cried”

4 OSCEOLA Seminole who refused to give up their lands in Florida. He refuses to sign treaty. Second Seminole War—1835-1842 1837—Osceola is captured….he dies a year later in prison.
