2 EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICES AND SUPERVISION WHAT WORKS IN THE FIELD OF CORRECTIONS

3 CDCR TO COUNTY JAIL 60 Days prior to release Risk Assessments Re-entry team (drug/alcohol, mental health, housing, employment, PO, recovery coaches, veterans services, general assistance) Establish relationship with client (and family) in creation of a case plan

4 COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL APPROACHES Addresses criminal thinking Three elements of Thinking for a Change: –Cognitive self change (thoughts and feelings) –Social skills (behaviors/body language/verbal) –Problem solving skills (decision making) Starts in custody/cooperation with Sheriff Provided in three locations out of custody (nights and Saturdays) Staff, CBOs and Recovery Coaches have also been trained in T4C as facilitators

5 EMPLOYMENT Collaborative effort with HHS Developed relations with business community Union training/work (construction) Three week program (tuition, tools) Lifetime free training with the Union Positive peer relationships/self esteem Economic security / addresses idle time

6 MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING Develop positive relationship with client Utilize intrinsic motivation Determine what is important to the client Mutually develop game plan Solid discharge plan Survey

7 Survey Questions 1. My Probation Officer is firm but fair. 2. My probation officer is a positive role model. 3. My probation officer helps me to learn how to solve my problems. 4. My probation officer helps to arrange various services for me. 5. My probation officers assists me in securing employment. 6. My probation officer communicates with me openly and respectfully. 7. My probation officer helps to motivate me. 8. My probation officer includes my family in my supervision. 9. Being on supervision has had a positive effect on my life. 10. My probation officer frequently meets me in my community. 11. My probation officer is involved in my substance abuse or mental health treatment. 12. When I do the right thing, my probation officer acknowledges it.
