Buying Personal Products How do I choose the best personal products for my needs? How can I get the most for my money?

Many Choices, Many Influences Consumer – anybody who buys goods or services Health goods you buy are those that you use to care for yourself such as: toothpaste, skin cream, suntan lotion, shampoo, and deodorant. You need to know how to choose the right products?

Spotting False Claims Quackery – Selling worthless products or services Long ago people used to travel from home to home, town to town, to sell anything and everything that will make you feel better. Today, we see the same in magazines, T.V., radio, and mail. Some things you may see: Tan Up – “Tan Fast” Glampoo – “Get the Hair you always wanted” Sparkle – “Get a new Smile” Slimmo – “Lose weight without dieting”

Think Before You Buy Advertising – Sending out messages to persuade the consumer to BUY. “It sounds to good to be True” Always check with you parents, do research, or ask someone who has used it, before you waste your money. Why, because if you buy it and it doesn’t work, your money is gone.

Smart Shopping Have you ever seen something in the store and you just had to have it and you bought it, one week later you see the same item in the paper or at another store for a cheaper price, it makes you sick because you could have save some money to spend elsewhere if you would have just been “Smart” not Eager.

Definitions Advertising – Sending out messages to persuade the consumer to buy. Warranty – a promise to make repairs or refund money if product does not work Discount Store – a store that offers lower prices but fewer salespeople and services Coupon – slips of paper that saves money on a certain brand. Generic – goods sold in plain packages

Looking Around When comparing brands, consider the following: Price – how much do you have to spend Unit Price – How does the item cost per ounce or per gram Benefits – Does one brand have more features than the other. Reputation – Do people you know use and like this brand. Convenience – Will travel time waste your time and money? Return Policies – Can you get your money back, or will the store only give credit? Sales and Discounts – Does one store regularly have sales or offer discounted prices? Sales Staff – Are the clerks helpful and knowledgeable?

Understanding Labels Before you buy please read labels. Make sure you know what you are buying before you buy it. You have INFER. Always make sure the item has certain things: FDA approval, ingrediants, directions, warning label, etc.
