4. What will I study? The program of studies in Applied Linguistics consists of a selection of topics at first year and upper levels (4.5 units each) which can be taken to complete a 36 units major, or a 22.5 units minor in your main degree. At fourth year level, a 36 units Honours program provides students interested in extending their studies in applied linguistics with a distinct advantage when seeking higher degree entry and scholarships or employment in a professional capacity. 7. Interesting topics of research Linguistic diversity in a small country town. Issues around education and community relations in immigrant community with diglossia, or a range of different dialects. The language needs of refugees. Adolescents and language change, the influence of American dialects, music etc. Narrative style in friendship groups (esp. reported speech), possibly related to gender. Gender and identity issues in second language acquisition. Identity and the naming of the “other” (i.e. not people like us) Ethnic speech style, ingroup language, among 2nd or 3rd generation immigrants. 7
