Describe life once they got there. Difficult. No wood, insects in houses, cooked with dried manure, no water, had to dig wells by hand, hard work on the farm, lonely, hot in summer, cold in winter, insect swarms The Great Plains Cheap land (homesteads, land along the railroad)

5 Homesteaders on the Great Plains dug up the wild grasses and planted wheat Crop prices dropped and the farmers left their fields unplanted Soil dried to dust Without crops, there was nothing to hold water in the soil.

6 Crops, livestock, and homes covered with dust Farmers had no crops to sell, so they had no money Many farmers couldn’t pay their mortgages and had to turn their farms over to the banks

7 Homeless and penniless, many families packed their belongings into old cars or trucks and headed west to look for a better life in California. Because many of them were from Oklahoma, they were called “Okies”

10 People without jobs were starving. They could try to find food in bread lines or at soup kitchens. Bread Lines and Soup Kitchens: charity organizations that give free food to the poor

11 A lot of families could no longer pay their rent or mortgage and lost their homes Homeless people formed communities called shantytowns People blamed President Hoover for the depression, and started calling the shantytowns “Hoovervilles”

12 Many homeless and unemployed began to wander around the country by walking, hitchhiking, or stealing rides on trains—these were called “hobos”

13 Americans would go to beautiful, air-conditioned movie theaters to see people who were rich, happy, and successful

14 Listened to radio shows (news, comedy, adventures of heroes, soap operas)
