5. Homesteaders on the Great Plains dug up the wild grasses and planted wheat Crop prices dropped and the farmers left their fields unplanted Soil dried to dust Without crops, there was nothing to hold water in the soil.

6. Crops, livestock, and homes covered with dust Farmers had no crops to sell, so they had no money Many farmers couldn’t pay their mortgages and had to turn their farms over to the banks

7. Homeless and penniless, many families packed their belongings into old cars or trucks and headed west to look for a better life in California. Because many of them were from Oklahoma, they were called “Okies”
