CELL Review Part I

Cells: The Basic Units of Life

Seeing the 1 st Cells 1665, Robert Hooke Looked at thin cork slices Saw hundreds of tiny boxes – called them “Cells” 1674, Anton van Leeuwenhoek looked at lake water, scrapings from teeth, pus, and water from rain gutters. Observed moving organisms = “Animalcules” (bacteria)

The Cell Theory Matthias Schleiden 1838 - plant biologist who discovered that all plants are made of cells Theodore Schwann 1839 - animal biologist who discovered that all animals are made of cells Rudolf Virchow 1855 - determined that all cells come from other cells

The Cell Theory a. All organisms are made of cells b. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in all living things c. All cells are produced from other cells Wacky History of Cell Theory

Organisms may be composed of one cell or many trillions of cells Unicellular - single-celled Examples include bacteria, some protozoa Multicellular - many-celled Examples include humans, dogs, earthworms, fish, etc.

The benefits of being Multicellular Being able to grow larger (grow more cells not larger cells) Cells are specialized for specific functions Being Multicellular allows organisms to perform more functions than unicellular organisms.

How is Life Organized? Cells – 200 different types – Each specialized for a particular job – Bone cells, muscle cells, skin cells Tissues –A group of cells grouped together that have a function

How is Life Organized? Organ – When 2 or more tissues work together to perform a specific job Organ System –When organs work together in groups to perform particular jobs.
