9 Think about a Science Lesson you have taught In addition to the science components, which of the following literacy components, if any, did you include in your lesson description? Speaking Listening Writing Reading Which ones would you like to work towards integrating in your lessons more?

11 Form pairs of individuals who –Remember the ice activity –Have never seen this activity before Find another “pair” to sit with. Experts explain the activity including when and how reading and writing were included in the lesson.

14 Unit 2: Making it Real 1 st grade 5 th grade 8 th grade High School (Chemistry)

15 Unit 2: Making it Real Each grade level includes: A summary video that provides an overview of the learning sequence A video that addresses speaking and listening in the science classroom A video that addresses writing in the science classroom A video that illustrates how reading is integrated into the science classroom.

16 Making it Real in 5 th grade The teacher developed a 7 day learning sequence in which she wanted her students to understand that metals have properties by which the metals can be identified, such as: Being shiny, malleable, and ductile; Having the ability to conduct heat and electricity; And, in some cases, the ability to be magnetic.

17 Making it Real in 5 th grade Read the teacher’s learning sequence overview, and consider how the teacher planned to have students write in their notebooks for reading as part of the learning for different types of writing for learning for oral language (speaking and listening)

18 Making it Real in 5 th grade We will be viewing portions of the learning sequence. While you watch the video, use the note-taking page to record observations about how literacy elements are embedded in the lesson.
