Session 4: Information on other WISE data requests than SoE Document 4: Plans for assessment of European waters for the next State of European waters report Bathing Water Directive Event/ date: Eionet Freshwater Workshop, 18.-19.6.2015 Author: dr.Lidija Globevnik, TC VODE

2 Analysing BW data availability BWD two bacteria concentrations: E. coli Intestinal enterococchi 1,089,254 samples in the database for the period 2008-2014; around 175,000 samples per season Event/ date: Eionet Freshwater Workshop, 18.-19.6.2015 Author: dr. Lidija Globevnik, TC VODE Inland BWs: 6710 Type Classification group Count Share of total Coastal Coastal and transitional 80103173.54% Transitional166761.53% Lake Inland 23452021.53% River370173.40% Total1089244100% Samples by water type

3 BW quality classification – trends Event/ date: Eionet Freshwater Workshop, 18.-19.6.2015 Author: dr. Lidija Globevnik, TC VODE Share of BWs meeting minimal quality standards is stable for the past 15 years The share of poor- and sufficient-quality BWs does not decrease (2.15-2.35% poor inland water per year) In 2014: 161 sufficient &158 poor status (319 BWs or 5%) Problematic are 6% of inland BWs

4 BW quality by microbiological parameters Conc EC by water category Event/ date: Eionet Freshwater Workshop, 18.-19.6.2015 Author: dr. Lidija Globevnik, TC VODE Conc IE by water category

5 Reasons? Event/ date: Eionet Freshwater Workshop, 18.-19.6.2015 Author: dr. Lidija Globevnik, TC VODE In order to explore reasons, other databases were connected to BWD data: –UWWTD: discharges from agglomerations, UWW systems –SoE: nutrients, hazardous substances in freshwaters –Raster data on population density (no direct correlation identified) –Raster data on climate (precipitation, temperature) Poor-quality BWs correlated to population density

6, Event/ date: Eionet Freshwater Workshop, 18.-19.6.2015 Author: dr. Lidija Globevnik, TC VODE BOD (SoE dataflow) in rivers/FEC and emissions of BOD and nutrients as reported under UWWTD (some countries) Average BOD in rivers (SoE) BOD BW quality class Excellent/Good 1,6 Sufficient/Poor 1,9,

7, Event/ date: Eionet Freshwater Workshop, 18.-19.6.2015 Author: dr. Lidija Globevnik, TC VODE BOD (SoE dataflow) in r,tivers and emissions of BOD, nutrients as reported under UWWTD (some countries) BODCODPN BW quality class excellent 7.229.10.32.7 good 14.288.61.518.0 sufficient 63.4336.43.754.3 poor 0.10.40.00.3 Average discharge [t/y] per FEC per BW quality class (UWWTD)

8 Quality of inland BW - conclusions Event/ date: Eionet Freshwater Workshop, 18.-19.6.2015 Author: dr. Lidija Globevnik, TC VODE The share of inland bathing waters with poor and sufficient quality has not decreased; some BWs poor-quality were delisted or temporarily closed –Some change quality classification (from poor to sufficient) due to exclusion of samples taken during short-term pollutions or abnormal situations; this is legal but shows environmental issues that can also be connected to other environmental management systems (such as urban rain water drainage, agricultural pollution, flooding) Brief research showed correlations of BW quality with population and urban water emissions, but Further data mining/investigation will be performed on: –short-term pressures (overspills of rain urban water etc.) –micro-location factors of environmental quality Poor-quality BWs correlated to population density
