Terra Nova Review Open-Ended Questions

Problem 1 On Tosheka’s science test, the ratio of right answers to wrong answers was the same as on her math test. It was 5 to 1. Her math test had 90 questions, 3 times as many as on her science test. What scores did she get on those tests? TO figure this out, you must answer how many questions she correctly answered on those tests. Show all your work.

Problem 2 Use an inch ruler to help solve this problem. About how many miles is it from Ft. Worth to Bellamy along Route 101? (Explain how you would solve the problem).

Problem 3 At a Halloween party, the ratio of people in costume to people at the party is 9:14. If there are 25 people who are not wearing costumes at the party, how many people are in costume? Show your work.

Problem 4 Solve 6.23 x 10 13 / 10 7. Show how you got your answer.

Answers 1 Sci. test 30 questions. 5 out of 6 questions were correct on each test. 5/6 x 90 = 75 and 5/6 x 30 = 25. She got a 25/30 or an 83 on the sci. test and a 75/90 or an 83 on the math test. Remember, 25/30 = 75/90, so 5/6 of either would be the same number. 2 Write a proportion 1/22 = length of line/x miles; solve using means extremes.

Answers 3. If 9 were in costume, 5 were not. Use the proportion 5/14 = 25/x. There were 70 people at the party. Use the proportion 9/14 = x/70. There were 45 people in costume. 4. Multiply 6.23 by 10 6. Subtract exponents to get 10 6.
