Just War. The Effects on humans… Just War … And the theory Just War

‘We and our allies are sure that our FIGHT is AGAINST EVIL and for a world in which GOODNESS and HONOUR may be the foundation of the LIFE of men in every land’ George VI, King of England - World War II.

The war destroys our country. It creates hatred. It kills people. We have lost parents because of war. We can’t eat because of war. We can’t study because of war. Peace only Peace Peace is all we need to make us happy. Peace and Reconciliation for all. Cynthia Rukeratabaro (13) Democratic Republic of Congo Freedom Jus in Bello Jus ad Bellum

Is war always wrong? Does War always lead to mass suffering? Is war which leads to liberation therefore a ‘just war’? ghjk How can the effects of war be ‘measured’? Does 1 casualty create an ‘un-just war’?

Just War. The Theory

In the theory of Just War there are two main terms, these being: Jus ad Bellum and Jus in Bello Jus ad Bellum means ‘when it is right to go to war’ Jus in Bello means ‘how war should be fought’..

Various arguments were put forward that war could be justified. They are as follows:..

 War has to have a ‘legitimate authority’ (Augustine)  There has to be a ‘just cause’ (Augustine)  There has to be ‘right intention’ (Aquinas) At this point the whole issue was separated into two categories following problems which arose from both sides of the Second World War, these being that both sides in the conflict claimed ‘legitimate authority’ and the ‘right intention’. The crucial factor thus became clearly establishing exactly what determines a ‘just war’. This is when Jus ad Bellum (when it is right to go to war) and Jus in Bello (how war should be fought) were introduced. In 1983, Catholic Bishops in America set out the conditions for Just War, these being:...

Conditions for Jus ad Bellum Conditions for Jus in Bello  There must be a just cause  War must be declared by a competent and legal authority  Comparative justice – the justice of the claims of both sides must be compared  There must be a right intention in going to war  War must be a last resort  There must be a reasonable probability of success  There must be reasonable proportion between the injustice suffered and the death and suffering of war  Proportionality (related to last point of Jus ad Bellum)  Discrimination (not to harm non-combatants)....

Now to you, me ol’ muckers! In a Vatican statement entitled ‘Gaudium et Spes’, it says that: ‘…any act of war aimed indiscriminately at the destruction of entire cities or of extensive areas along with their populations is a crime against God and man himself. It merits unhesitating and unequivocal condemnation’ (Article 80) In the context of this statement and what you have learnt about Just War theory, you have three minutes to work out what the irregularity is between the text on the right and the Bible quotes below. Remember that both purport to be Xian. At the same time we captured and destroyed every town and put everyone to death – men, women and children. We left no survivors (Deuteronomy 2:34) Joshua spared no one, everyone was put to death. This is what the Lord God of Israel has commanded (Joshua 10:40).
