2 Read page 360-364 In the box with the leaders name write the name of the political system or movement (fascism, militarism, Nazism, or totalitarianism) In the next row, complete the blanks based on your reading In the last row describe one or more ways the United States or other allied countries could have prevented these leaders rise to power (think what gave them the ability to rise in the first place). Why do you believe we didn’t stop their rise to power? What had happened in WWI? What state was the world in at the time? This needs to be at least 1-2 sentences.

8 Action 1935-1936 Germany remilitarizes Hitler uses his military to move into the Rhineland, and when they aren’t challenged establishes themselves there. Reaction France appealed to Great Britain for support, but they didn’t want to get involved and the world accepted Germany’s act. 1935 Italy invades Ethiopia Mussolini attacked Ethiopia and overwhelmed them. Ethiopia appealed to the League of Nations for help. The League voted to impose sanctions against Italy, but they failed because they were weak.

9 Action 1936-139 Germany & Italy aid nationalist in Spanish Civil War General Francisco Franco led an army against the republic supported by Germany & Italy. Reaction The Soviet Union sent supplies, but all other countries continued along appeasement 1937 Japanese troops massacre civilians in Nanjing Attacked Manchuria & China to expand. (The Japanese army captured the city of Nanjing. Japanese soldiers went on a six-week rampage, killing approximately 300,000 Chinese civilians. ) The League of Nations criticized Japan, and they withdrew. This test of the League led to their failure and showed their lack of ability to do anything. (Roosevelt made a speech calling for a quarantine against aggressor nations like Japan.)

10 Action Germany signed a nonaggression pact with the USSR, which freed German forces to invade Poland. Germany used blitzkrieg tactics to attack so quickly that Polish forces were not able to mobilize. Soviet forces also invaded from the east, and Poland quickly fell. Reaction France and Britain followed through with their original announcement and declared war on Germany. However, they were not able to do anything to stop the invasion and the takeover of Poland. 1940 Germany rolled tanks through the Maginot Line and invaded France forcing France to surrender. Leaving most of France occupied by Germany. The British troops escaped at Dunkirk along with French troops, which allowed Britain the ability to stay in the war.

12 Action 1940 Germany launched an air assault on Britain. England lost 1000 planes & Germany lost 1700 planes. He attempted to attack London and civilians, but finally withdrew. Reaction Winston Churchill said they would not back down and their British pilots helped aid in Hitler from withdrawing from full scale invasion of England.
