2 Read the Passage and Determine the Organizational Pattern
The North (union) made up of 23 states, had more men, more money, and more industry than the South. The North also controlled the navy and started a naval blockade that prevented the South from receiving help or supplies from abroad. The 11 states of the South (the Confederacy) were much weaker, but they had the benefit of good generals and a great fighting spirit.

4 Compare and Contrast In a comparison, you examine two or more things by looking for similarities. In a contrast, you point out differences between two things.

Sacajawea proved to be much more important to the Lewis and Clark expedition than her husband was. To begin, she knew both the languages and the land of the Shoshoni, or the snakes as they were often called. Another reason was that she knew how to keep the company supplied with roots and berries, an important addition to their diet. When one of the pirogues (a native canoe) overturned, it was Sacajawea who kept her head and saved many irreplaceable supplies. Sacajawea may have saved the expedition with her knowledge and life skills.

8 Argument and Support Support:
In argument, the author expresses a viewpoint or an opinion and then supports it. Viewpoint: She proved to be much more important to the expedition than her husband was. Support: -She knew both the languages and the land - keept the company supplied with roots and berries, an important addition to their diet. -it was Sacajawea who kept her head and saved many irreplaceable supplies.

In February 1941, the United States Armed Forces asked the Red Cross to organize American blood banks. Dr. Drew was appointed assistant director of this national program. He immediately established standards as he trained many staffs and volunteers. Using mobile units, he directed the openings of blood collection centers nationwide. When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the United States had an ample supply of plasma on hand.

11 Chronological Order Chronological order means organizing events in time order, or the order in which they actually happened. Every experience or event happens in a specific point of time. If an author describes a series of events in the order in which they happened, he or she is using chronological order. Signal words or phrases may be: before, during, after, yesterday, immediately, suddenly, in ten years, and so on. Look back at the passage. Locate the signal words the author used.

The ocean’s delicate coral reefs are often changed by humans. Dumping waste products and garbage in the sea results in changes in the natural environment. Due to these changes the ocean becomes polluted, and as a consequence, coral reefs are damaged. When the ocean becomes badly polluted, coral reefs die.

15 Did you guess Cause and Effect?
A cause is WHY something happens. An effect is a RESULT after something happens. Look for key words like because, as a result, since, as a consequence, etc. Now let’s look back at the paragraph and answer these questions: The ocean becomes polluted because of …..? The cause: dumping waste products and garbage The effect: ocean is polluted When the ocean is polluted, what is a result? The cause: ocean is polluted The effect: coral reefs are damaged and can even die

The modern Olympics have become very big and expensive to operate. The city or country that hosts the games often loses a lot of money. A stadium, pools, and playing fields must be built for the athletic events, and housing is needed for the athletes who come from around the world. And all of these facilities are used for only two weeks! In 1984, Los Angeles took care of the problem by charging a fee for companies who wanted to be official sponsors of the games. Many buildings that were already built in the Los Angeles area were also used. Many colleges and universities in the area became playing and living sites.

18 Did you guess Problem and Solution?
A passage with the organizational pattern problem and solution has a problem presented, usually in the beginning of the text. Then a solution follows-an answer to the problem! Look at the passage again. Turn and talk to a partner. What was the problem in the passage? What was the solution presented in the passage?
