1 Welcome to A B C For Sundance Parents

2 A lways ask your child what went well at school today! B oast about the good things your child tells you! C elebrate your child’s mistakes because everybody learns from mistakes!

3 Tips from the Principal Set an after school routine - Rest-Play-Snack-Homework -Kids should do their homework before dinner if possible. The whole family needs to honor homework time. -Turn off the TV! -Establish a quiet place! Check your child’s homework every night. -Make sure their name is on the paper -Be sure it is neatly done! -Re-write parts that are not clear! Clean out your child’s backpack every night. -Look at graded work. -Talk about mistakes and how to correct them. Have school supplies available at home. -Pencils, paper, erasers, scissors, crayons, colored pencils, ruler dictionary, graph paper, etc. Make a morning checklist to avoid repeating the same directions every day! Take a shower Brush your teeth Brush your hair Etc.

4 Plan Ahead! Locate shoes and pick out your outfit for school the night before! Put homework in your backpack and put it by the door! What if you can’t help your child with their homework! Try to finish as much as possible. Circle the problem area. E-mail, call or write a note to the teacher for your child to explain the problem.

5 Reading! K-1 st grade –Book-it! –Reading Recipes for Reading! If your child does not know a word DO NOT GIVE THEM THE WORD!!! Suggested Prompts! Praise them for stopping! Check the picture! What makes sense? Read it again and make a guess! Does your guess make sense? If they still don’t know the word then tell them! 1.Pause! 2.Wait 5 seconds or until the end of the sentence! 3.Prompt!

6 Periodically ask questions like: –“Who is your favorite character?” –“What do you think will happen next?” –“What part of the book did you like the best?” –Can you think of a different ending?” –“Does it remind you of another book we’ve read? –“How do you rate the book? Thumbs up! Thumbs down!

7 HAVE FUN WITH THE STORY! Retell the story in your own words! Write about the story. Draw a picture about the story! Go back and find the hard words. Review problem solving techniques. Use these tips and an independent reader will soon appear!

8 2 nd -5 th grades –Know your child’s reading level. –Know your child’s weekly reading goal. –Ask how they are doing throughout the week. –What books have they read? –How many total points they have? (4 th -5 th ) –Check the PTA website! (coming soon) –Ask for your child’s “Diagnostic Report”. AR Readers are Leaders! AR (Accelerated Reader)

9 Math Problem Solving “What do I need to find out?” Students must read the question and figure out what they need to do. They need to circle the question and underline important facts that will help them solve the problem. “How will I solve the problem?” Students need to figure out a strategy to use to solve the problem. (draw a picture, use symbols, What will I draw? How will I label it?) Students need to choose a strategy to solve the problem. (Do I add, subtract, multiply or divide?) Students SOLVE the problem. Students look back at the problem to make sure that the answers fit the question. (Read the problem again to make sure the student accurately drew the pictures and did the correct math.)
