The Health Roundtable KEY PROBLEM  MCNZ asserts that formal intern training should include professionalism and clinical leadership.  PGY1 is a busy year for most.  Many can feel overwhelmed and undervalued.  Continuing medical education (CME) is often sacrificed to clinical workload  Traditionally teaching for interns has been delivered in weekly 1 hour lecture formats with poor attendance due to clinical demands. 2

The Health Roundtable AIM OF THIS INNOVATION  To improve attendance by interns at teaching sessions and to ensure education syllabus is in line with medical council guidelines  To foster a professional attitude towards continuing professional development to continue to drive quality improvement in all specialties  To ensure that all interns receive a high quality educational package that refreshes necessary skills that all doctors need, in order to give the best care to patients 3

The Health Roundtable BASELINE DATA 4

The Health Roundtable KEY CHANGES IMPLEMENTED  A series of compulsory, time protected two-day modular workshops were created for all interns at CMDHB and the complete package implemented in 2011. These were in addition to the improved weekly teaching sessions. Weekly Teaching HOTshopSkillShopPROshopSmartShop 5

The Health Roundtable Curriculum revised, updated in line with MCNZ guidelines and to include key sessions run by other disciplines Protected teaching time with pagers held by Research Fellows Trainee Interns and PGY2s also invited Designated regular teaching time Thursdays 1-2pm organised and advertised throughout the DHB Feedback forms to enable evaluation and review of curriculum Improving weekly teaching sessions Weekly reminders (emails/pages) Key points collated and emailed to all House Officers within the week to reinforce learning and for non-attendees 6

The Health Roundtable OUTCOMES SO FAR  In 2011 there was 97% attendance of the modular workshops and mean attendance of the first nine teaching sessions doubled from 2010.  Only 1/29 participants was aware of their continuing professional development requirements for progression to PGY2 prior to attending of PROshop. 7

The Health Roundtable OUTCOMES SO FAR  Importantly interns highly valued the modular workshops. Specific points valued by the interns in multi- question likert surveys were small group discussion, simulations and protected teaching time. 8

The Health Roundtable LESSONS LEARNT  Other institutions should consider formalising their education package for interns and ensuring they align with MCNZ policies and assist interns to continue lifelong learning.  Modular workshops should be considered as part of new education programmes due to demonstrated improvement in intern knowledge, confidence and skills.  Protected teaching time and improvement of weekly sessions should be addressed at all institutions.  Interns who are up-to-date with CME are likely to provide contemporary care to better patient outcomes. 9
