1 New Deal Legislation The Agricultural Adjustment Act By: Andrew Grieco Michael Frigo Mike McKeon

2 Description Name of Legislation: – The Agricultural Adjustment Act Created by Agricultural Secretary, Henry Wallace 1933 – One of Roosevelt’s first of fifteen major legislations

3 Description Purpose/Goal? – Congress declared their duty to balance supply and demand for farm produce – so that prices would support purchasing power for farms. – Would pay farmers to not plant on their land – kill of excess livestock so prices of produce on market would go up. – Money to pay off farmers gathered by taxing companies who made farm products.

4 Description How was it Implemented? – FDR appointed Henry Wallace as Secretary of Agriculture. – Wallace drafted the AAA in 1933 – In 1936, original draft deemed unconstitutional – because it is wrong to tax one group of processors. – Second draft drawn up in 1938 – No processing tax, Accepted

5 Description Target of the AAA? – Farmers

6 Role of Government How did it change the Role of Government? – The government changed from Laissez Faire – Federal Spending increased because government was paying each farmer Paid to not grow crops on part of their lands

7 Role of Government Increase of Government involvement in everyday lives – Government got involved in the farmers lives, unlike in Hoovers Administration. – most farmers did not like how government controlled them. – Others had no choice took the government money.

8 8 Role of Government Increase of Governments Regulation in Big Business – The government increased regulation to the entire agricultural business – Government regulated what/ how much was allowed to harvest.

9 Effectiveness Effective: It did help many farmers through tough economic times Helped raise Farm prices

10 Effectiveness Not Effective: A portion of the law was declared unconstitutional in 1936 It did not help farmers with fewer acres as much Upset some Americans
