Polynomials Terms and Multiplying

Polynomial Term – number, variable or combination of the two, 2, x, 3y Polynomial – made up of 1 or more terms, separated by plus or minus Monomial – one term Binomial – 2 terms Trinomial – 3 terms (quadratic) Degree of polynomial – highest exponent in the polynomial

Multiply Number multiplies to number Variables add the exponents Monomial to binomial or trinomial Distribute what is outside parenthesis to everything inside the parenthesis

Binomial Multiplication FOIL helps us to remember what to multiple Result should be 4 terms, but usually two of them can combine F(irst) – first term in each binomial O(utside) – first term in first binomial and second term in second binomial I(nside) – second term is first binomial and first term in second binomial L(ast) – second term in first binomial and second term in second binomial

FOIL

Special Cases Perfect Square – squaring one binomial, multiplying it by itself First term squared sign of second first term times second term times 2 plus second term squared Sum and Difference – same two terms but one binomial is addition and one binomial is subtraction First term squared minus second term squared

Homework Show FOIL step and CLT stepSpecial cases NO work needed
