2 Civilians become Soldiers ? Why did so many volunteer to fight? Between 18 & 30 yrs. old. Rushed to enlist, join the army. German & Irish largest ethnic group. North eventually accepted African- Americans. 2 million served union; 1million confederacy.

3 Turning Civilians into Soldiers. Union Soldier – training at an army camp; given blue uniform. Contractors, private suppliers, shoddy goods. Took coats,boots, and other clothes from the dead. Sometimes had to find food on their own.

4 A New Kind of War ? How was the Civil War different from previous conflicts? Primitive medical techniques;filthy conditions. Camps and soldiers filthy and smelly. Poor hygiene,conditions and practices that promote health. More soldiers died of disease – rather than the battlefield.

5 Civil War Prison Camps. Prison camps were the worst. Elmira, New York 12,121 prisoners died. Andersonville, GA 13,000 died from starvations, disease, and exposure.

6 Changes in Military Technology New weapons changed strategies and the number of casualties. Rifles and minie’ balls; shoot farther Ironclads ships; covered with iron; faster & better protected. March 1862 2 ironclads fought all day– Union – Monitor;Merrimack – Confederate
