1 Warm-Up – Journal “Allusion” Write this question down and answer it to the best of your ability: “What is allusion, and how do authors use it to create meaning?” If you are not sure, make a guess. : )

3 What is an allusion? An ALLUSION is: - a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance.

4 Examples “Don’t act like a Romeo in front of her.” – “Romeo” is a reference to Shakespeare’s Romeo, a passionate lover of Juliet, in “Romeo and Juliet”. The rise in poverty will unlock the Pandora’s box of crimes. – This is an allusion to one of Greek Mythology’s origin myth, “Pandora’s box”. “This place is like a Garden of Eden.” –This is a biblical allusion to the “garden of God” in the Book of Genesis. “Hey! Guess who the new Newton of our school is?” – “Newton”, means a genius student, alludes to a famous scientist Isaac Newton. “Stop acting like my ex-husband please.” – Apart from scholarly allusions we refer to common people and places in our speech.

5 “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower. But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.

6 “Nothing Gold Can Stay” What is the poem about? What is the poem’s meaning or message? What is the author’s attitude toward the subject? Identify the allusion in this passage. What point is Frost making with this allusion? What two things is he comparing? What message does Frost convey in this poem?

7 Analyze – Figurative Language Find text evidence in the poem for: Metaphor Personification Simile Symbolism Imagery Mood Theme Alliteration

8 Journal – “Change” Write about something you thought would never change but did, in fact, change. Was it a change for the better? Or did it make you feel sad, angry, betrayed?
