3. A Day in Kindergarten (looks like): Arrival, Breakfast and Morning Work Enrichment Word work/Reading Specials (PE, Music, Computers, Library, Art, Character Education) Writing Lunch/Recess Math and Math Workshop Science/Social Studies Dismissal

4. We expect your child to follow school rules: Let teachers teach and others learn. Stay in your own zone. Follow directions the 1 st time they are given. Respect yourself, others and property.

5. Our curriculum is driven by: *North Carolina Common Core and Essential Standards *Center for Gifted Education *William and Mary *Junior Great Books

6. Math Objectives Counting and Cardinality Know number names and count sequence to 100. Count to tell the number of objects. Compare numbers. Operations and Algebraic Thinking Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from. Number and Operations in Base Ten Work with numbers 11 ‐ 19 to gain foundations for place value. Measurement and Data Describe and compare measurable attributes. Classify objects in categories.

7. Literacy Objectives Reading Foundational Skills: directionality, spacing, identifying letters and sounds, rhyming, segmenting syllables, CVC sound segmentation, read high-frequency words, know long and short vowel sounds. Reading Literature: retelling and sequencing story events, identifying characters and setting, name the author and illustrator and define their roles, determine meaning of new vocabulary from contextual clues. Reading Informational Text: asking questions about texts, finding important ideas, comparing similarities and differences between texts.

8. Writing: use a combination of dictating, drawing, and writing to compose opinion/informative/narrative pieces, explore digital tools Speaking and Listening: listen and take turns, continue a conversation through multiple exchanges, ask questions related to texts, describe (people, places, events). Language: print upper- and lowercase letters, plural nouns by adding /s/ or /es/, capitalize “I” and the first word of a sentence, recognize and name end punctuation, spell words phonetically.

Science and Social Studies Objectives Science:  Forces and Motion: Positions and motions of objects and organisms observed in the environment.  -Matter: Properties and Change: Objects are described based on their physical properties and how they are used.  -Earth Systems, Structures and Processes: Understand change and observable patterns of weather that occur from day to day and throughout the year.  -Structures and Functions of Living Organisms: Compare characteristics of animals that make them alike and different from other animals and nonliving things. Social Studies: awareness among similarities among individuals within the school, communities, and world. a sense of purpose regarding their role of themselves and others within the community and world by comparing family traditions. geographic awareness of their surroundings by learning to adapt or modify. the knowledge of history to understand the past and present; and contributions of historical figures. the knowledge of why certain events and people are celebrated through national holidays. build upon basic economic concepts by relating to their own wants and needs.

10. Working Together You can expect us to: Know your child’s strengths and goals. Care for your child’s safety and learning. Communicate concerns and successes. Plan instruction to prepare your child for first grade. Provide varied experiences and methods of teaching to address all learning styles and multiple intelligences. We will expect you to: Send your child rested and prepared to learn. Read each night with your child. Practice skills at home that address your child’s goals (see newsletter, homework calendar and Academic Alert tips). Communicate and work with Tuckaseegee staff to make this year a success for your child.

11. Our goal... is that your child makes 1 to 1 1/2 years growth in reading. is that your child masters 90% of tested objectives in math, science and social studies

14. Things to Know Save the Dates: September 24 th - All health assessments and immunizations due. Birthday treats at lunch. Weekly Homework Assignments Written notes are required for transportation changes Notes are required for absences Volunteering opportunities: classroom jobs, at home jobs, chaperone field trips, Thursday folders, reading buddy- REGISTER Each child should have a change of clothes.
