2 Session Objectives Understand what an organisation is, Be able to identify key characteristics of different organisations.

3 What Is An Organisation? An can be broadly defined as: “Any individual or more commonly, any group of individuals, working in a structured way to accomplish specified tasks or results”.

4 Main Types of Organisation There are three main types of organisation: Commercial Organisation – Owned by businessmen / shareholders and run to make profit e.g. Tesco Public Service Organisation Owned and run by the state e.g. Hollyfast Primary School Charitable Organisation Run by a charitable trust and all money generated goes to good causes e.g. Save The children

5 Features of Organisations During this unit you need to be able to describe features of the your work experience organisation Typical features of organisations include: Organisation Type Main purpose Key Activities Main customer / client group served by the organisation.

6 Practice Practice describing the features of organisations. Complete the table below for a range of organisations including as much detail as possible. Tesco mobile offers a mobile phone service Online store sells wider range of non food goods for mail order and food which is delivered using their vans from store in certain areas. Other online stores provide banking facilities and insurance. Tesco club card generates lots of data which they may sell to other companies for market research. Domestic customers wanting value for money
