By Emily Beaumont

I used graphite pencils from 9H to 9B and made a scale from light to dark by pressing on harder with the pencils as I got further down the scale. I used diagonal lines to cover the areas (left photo) and cross hatching to shade (right photo).

To start with, I drew a square and divided it into 9 equal squares. I then divided each of those squares into random sections. Starting from any side, I shaded each section from dark to light using a HB pencil.

I used pencils 9B to 9H to go from light to dark by gradually pressing harder with the pencils. 9B is the darkest and 9H is the lightest. Next I drew 22 squares and copied the marks from the project sheets by creating lines and patterns with different pencils

I created my own patterns and textures using different techniques such as stippling, cross hatching and zig zags. I made them unique by creating gradients by pressing on harder and using different pencils.

*If you can’t read it, the text box says: This is my favourite song so I know it quite well, therefore I found myself drawing to the lyrics and rhythm. The song starts off quite soft so I used a 2H pencil but then it picks up and gets more ‘rocky’ so I switched to an 8B pencil and made transitions between many pencils during the song to represent the pitch and rhythm of it.

I used many different pencils to shade and erased where the highlights were. *While shading the sphere, I found that you had to layer the pencil a lot to get the desired look. The hardest part for me was shading the sphere because it has so many various tones due to the light source and shadows I achieved this by using different pencils, layering and blending with a piece of tissue. I would press harder and try to be less scared to be rougher to give sharper edges and more defined shadows next time.

I find it interesting to see how much your mood changes over the course of a week. Also, I found it hard to describe many of my moods. I used different pressures on the pencil for some days for anger or sadness.
