14. © 1996-2004 NETGEAR ®. All rights reserved *** NETGEAR Confidential *** Understand iSCSI »What is iSCSI iSCSI = Internet SCSI, allows SCSI commands to be sent over an Ethernet network »The benefits of iSCSI Enable SMB to build SANs with standard equipment such as Gigabit Ethernet switches and network interface cards (NICs) Avoid the high entry costs and specialized knowledge for Fiber Channel »iSCSI SAN An iSCSI SAN accesses and transfers data in blocks Each connected server sees the remote storage as a local drive »How iSCSI works iSCSI networks use two types of nodes: o Initiators - the hosts requesting data from storage, and o Targets - the storage holding data Users can install free initiator software, widely available from sources such as Microsoft and standard Linux OS distributions

15. © 1996-2004 NETGEAR ®. All rights reserved *** NETGEAR Confidential *** NAS vs. iSCSI SAN »Both utilize TCP/IP Network »A NAS is a single storage device that operates on data files »An iSCSI SAN that operates on disk blocks »ReadyNAS Pro fully integrated iSCSI support to be available via FW update in Q4 CIFS/NFS/AFP iSCSI Initiator iSCSI target

16. © 1996-2004 NETGEAR ®. All rights reserved *** NETGEAR Confidential *** RAID 6 »What is RAID 6 Any form of RAID that can continue to execute read and write requests to all of a RAID array's virtual disks in the presence of any two concurrent disk failures [SNIA definition] RAID 6 can handle the failure of any two drives in the array Striping and dual parity »Why 6-bay Pro with RAID 6 makes sense? Capacity = (Size of Drive) * (Number of Drives - 2) Storage Efficiency = (Number of Drives - 2) / (Number of Drives) » 4-bay RAID 6 - 50% » 6-bay RAID 6 - 67% »ReadyNAS Pro supports RAID 6 RAID 6 is user configurable

17. © 1996-2004 NETGEAR ®. All rights reserved *** NETGEAR Confidential *** X-RAID2 »What is X-RAID2 Based on NETGEAR patient-pending X-RAID technology The 2nd generation auto expandable RAID technology with improved performance and incremental capacity utilization »What’s the advantage of X-RAID2 Robust and reliable Simplified process and optimized performance Vertical and horizontal online volume expansion without the complicated and time-consuming migration and system rebooting Optimized utilization of incremental drive capacity supporting different size of drives »Limitation of X-RAID2 Incompatible with X-RAID

18. © 1996-2004 NETGEAR ®. All rights reserved *** NETGEAR Confidential *** 1 TB RNDP6350 for example, with 3 x 500G disks, a volume is created. Redundant 1 TB capacity To expand, one 1TB disk is added - the volume is expanded to 1.5 TB with redundancy. The incremental capacity of 500 GB on the 4 th disk is not utilized. When the 2 nd 1TB disk is added to the 5 th slot, the base volume would expand to 2 TB. Volume expansion with X-RAID2 500GB 1 TB Meanwhile, the incremental 500GB capacity becomes redundant and is added to the volume. The overall capacity becomes 2+0.5 =2.5TB with X-RAID2 redundancy. When the 3 nd 1TB disk is added, the volume is expanded to 3.5 TB (2+0.5)+(0.5+0.5) all with X-RAID data protection. Base volume auto expansion Utilize Redundant incremental capacity »RNDP6350

19. © 1996-2004 NETGEAR ®. All rights reserved *** NETGEAR Confidential *** X-RAID2 Advantages »X-RAID2 vs. Other “Online Expansion” »Just ask 1 question to those claim support “online expansion” What will happen if there is a power outage during the time consuming expansion ? X-RAID2Other “Online Expansion” Ease of expansionYesNo No expertise in RAID technology need for expansion YesNo Less Time consumingYesNo Data Safety in expansionYesNo Safe from power outage during expansion YesNo Automatic expansionYesNo

20. © 1996-2004 NETGEAR ®. All rights reserved *** NETGEAR Confidential *** X-RAID2 Advantages (2) Other “online expansion” »First, insert the disks you want to expand with »Then, you need to manually perform a RAID level migration or restriping Migration requires changing RAID level » This process can require several hours to a day depending on hard disk size. » Say goodbye to your data if you encounter a power outage during this phase (this is easy to verify) »After migration part is completed, you need to manually extend the filesystem, another lengthy process user needs to wait for. »Expansion of one disk can take a couple of days »In some NAS, you cannot expand by replacing with larger disks ReadyNAS X-RAID2 »Horizontal expansion – hot-add disk to the chassis. Volume automatically expands. »Vertical expansion – replace each disk one-by-one letting it rebuild. After replacing 2 or more disks, reboot to expand capacity automatically. You can keep doing this as larger drives become available. »Alerts sent at every stage to guide through the expansion process, even in native language »No need to have RAID knowledge »No need to use any volume management »Data protected each step of the way – expansion continues after power outage
