Prospect: It could incorporate the Freedom Towers. Additionally, the location could provides links to charities that help the victims of 9/11. 3 Genome Purpose: Genome allows residents to interact with a genetic laboratory. Tests the efficiency of teaching genetics in a 3-D learning world. Could potentially be used by professors who want to teach about genetics in a virtual 3-D environment. Platform: Includes garden based Mendelian genetics, models of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genetics, and samples of population genetics. Each of these displays are interactive and sometimes simulate experiments. Profit Model: Non-profit learning Island. Could potentially be supported by Universities or the general community. Prospect: Could examine modern genetics. For example, the Island could explore the themes presented in Richard Dawkin’s “The Selfish Gene” or the potentials of gene therapy. Platform: Allows Second Life members to take an interactive tour of the Sistine Chapel, one of the wonders of the world. Profit Model: Vassar College supports this model. Vassar College is a non-profit educational institution. Prospect: A hit of Second Life so far, people have commented that it reminds them of being there (minus the crowds and the rushing). Models like this give Second Life a very education resource. It allows people to view the Sistine Chapel and its architecture without actually making the trip to the Vatican City. Sistine Chapel

5 Purpose: To show members of the Second Life community what the CDC does and is all about. Platform: A virtual lab and many interactive and engaging activities showing the goals and mission of the CDC. Profit Model: Funded by the CDC, a non-profit government agency. Prospect: Could expand the reach of the CDC and the information they are looking to get to the public. As of 2008 they averaged 200 visitors a month. They are looking to increase that amount with a new conference center and even more interactive activities. Center for Disease Control

6 Amity Island Named after Jaws Purpose: Entertainment Place: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/ Amity%20Island/176/128/24 Population: General Public Platform: Exploration and activities (Ferris Wheel, horror fills, jet skiing, shopping, etc) Profit Model: Selling goods Prospect: Fun entertainment site that could grow to include more things and become a real “date” site for virtual dating.

7 Pharmatopia “An interactive virtual tabletting research and development laboratory” Purpose: Higher education of pharmacy students Place: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife /Pharmatopia/124/124/22 Population: Students of the 10 universities Platform: Simulation Profit Model: Funded by the schools Prospect: A location for those interested in pharmaceuticals. Also, a chance to share and explore new technologies.
