1 Adequate Yearly Progress By Allyson, Brette, and Riley

2 Define AYP Allows the U.S. department of education to determine how every school and corporations in the country is performing academically according to results on standardized tests AYP is a diagnostic tool.

3 No Child Left Behind Overall student population Each state must establish a timeline for adequate yearly progress. Overall goal by 2014.

4 Creating the Criteria for AYP Individual States Peer revision Minimum percentage of students that must pass

5 Indiana’s AYP Requirements Two ways schools and school corporations can make AYP: Meeting all performances, participation, and attendance targets for the overall student population and 30 or more subgroups. Reduce the number of students not meeting performance target and meet attendance rate targets. Consequences for not making AYP: Once the school does not make AYP after two years they enter improvement status. Improvement status consists of a series of interventions that become more extensive for each year that the school does not make AYP.

6 Performance and Action High performance is required by NCLB. How is it measured? How do schools improve AYP?

7 Successful Progress State to state basis. Three requirements a year. State education departments must determine the yearly progress of the districts, and find the districts that are in need of improvement.

8 Unsuccessful Progress When not meeting AYP goals: Improvement status. Supplemental services. Corrective action. After five consecutive years the school has these options: Chartering, reconstitution, contracting, state takeover, or major governance restructuring.

9 Strategies for Improving Rigorous curriculum Placement of “graduation specialists” in high schools Comprehensive redesign focused in rigorous and relevant education Integrated technology throughout learning Monitoring schools closely and stepping in when needed Flexibility Equal amount of resources Reinforce long term failure is not acceptable

10 Controversy Special Education The performances of small numbers of students that do not reflect the progress of the whole school. NCLB pays no attention to whether students below average were making strides or those above average.

12 School AYP Summary Reports Green- Made AYP Red- Did not make AYP White- NA (Insufficient Number of Students) Schools must meet every AYP target (green) Any red will result in school not making AYP
