The regulatory body and the operating organization should make appropriate arrangements for measurement, assessment (both ‘self-assessment’ and independent assessment) and continuous improvement of their management systems. Action 80. The operating organization and the regulatory body should ensure that the effectiveness of their management systems is monitored and measured, and that self-assessments as well as independent assessments are conducted regularly for continuous improvement. 2014Integrated Management System4

Self- and independent assessment Self-assessment vs. independent assessment “Self-assessment” means a routine and continuing process conducted by senior management and management at other levels to evaluate the effectiveness of performance in all areas of their responsibility “Independent assessment” means assessments such as audits or surveillances carried out to determine the extent to which the requirements for the management system are fulfilled, to evaluate the effectiveness of the management system and to identify opportunities for improvement 2014Integrated Management System6

7. IAEA 3. Non-conformances, remedial actions The RB should determine the causes of non-conformances and remedial actions to be taken to prevent their recurrence in its activities. The status and effectiveness of all corrective and preventive actions should be monitored and reported to management. Potential non-conformances that could detract from the organization’s performance are to be identified using feedback from other organizations, both internal and external; through research; sharing of knowledge and experience; and identification of best practices 2014Integrated Management System7

8. IAEA 3. Non-conformances, remedial actions Corrective actions for eliminating non-conformances shall be determined and implemented. Preventive actions to eliminate the causes of potential non-conformances shall be determined and taken. The status and effectiveness of all corrective and preventive actions shall be monitored and reported to management at an appropriate level in the organization. Management system review It should cover but should not be limited to: Outputs from all forms of assessment; Results delivered and objectives achieved by the organization and its processes; Non-conformances and corrective and preventive actions; Lessons learned from other organizations; Opportunities for improvement. Improvement Opportunities for the improvement of the management system need to be identified and actions to improve the processes shall be selected, planned and recorded Improvement plans shall include plans for the provision of adequate resources, using project management methods Actions for improvement shall be monitored through to their completion and the effectiveness of the improvement shall be checked Individuals in the organization should be considered the best source of ideas for improvements.
