8 th grade math Algebraic Properties

Commutative Property Definition: The numbers change position, but the answer stays the same. Example (s) A + B= B + A A x B= B x A 5 + 9= 9 +5

Associative Property Definition: Parenthesis changes, but the answer stays the same. Example: A + (B+ C)= (A + B) + C A x (B x C)= (A x B) x C

Distributive Property Definition: The number on the outside of the parenthesis, is multiplied by each number on the inside of the parenthesis. Example A (B + C)=(AB + AC) A (B - C)=(AB - AC) 5(3 + 4)= (5x3 + 5x4)

Identity Property Definition: -addition- a number plus zero is that number. -multiplication- a number times one is equal to that number. Example (s): 7 + 0=7 7 x 1=7

Integers and Absolute Value Integers: Positive and negative numbers. Example: -5, -2, 1000, Absolute Value: how far a number is from zero. Always positive!!!! Example: absolute value of -3 is 3. 01 -3 3
