Civil War Simulation

What’s the point? The simulation teaches valuable lessons about the actuality of war. Players must rely on one another, and gather, keep, and distribute rations to survive. Objective: The winning side will have to accumulate the highest point total.

How to fight. Each player is given four index cards representing provisions and an armband which represents your life. Rifle (15 points) Shoes (10pts.) Clothing (8 pts.) Food (5 pts.) Sword (generals only…20 pts.) Armband is worth 20 points with a kill.

Soooo……. Each soldier begins with 58 points. Each general begins with 78 points. There will be five generals per class (chosen by the teacher). Each general will have 5-7 privates in their regiment.

Fighting continued…. Each player will have 1 large index card on which they will write seven questions with answers that must come from the Antebellum, Civil War, and/or Reconstruction units in the classroom textbooks. NC text pages 314-379 History Alive text pages 273-323

All questions must be on your ONE, LARGE notecard. You cannot make any attachments to the card. Your card must be stamped. YOU MUST PUT THE PAGE NUMBER THAT ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION NEXT TO YOUR ANSWER! Question Card

All questions must have a definitive answer. It cannot be a true/false, yes/no, or opinion question. All questions must be approved by your general first. All questions must then be approved by the teacher!!! Your teacher will stamp your card. Question Card

Questions should not be trick questions or questions no one would study. BAD – How many Confederates died at the Battle of Antietam? GOOD – What battle had the most Confederate casualties? Questions should have only one correct answer. BAD - Where is Fort Sumter? the Atlantic Ocean, Charleston, the United States, South Carolina, North America GOOD – What state is Fort Sumter in? South Carolina Question Card

You cannot ask a question in which the answer is a date. You cannot ask a question that has multiple answers such as: - What was the Amnesty Act and who did it forgive? - Name the eleven states that seceded? Question Card

Use important vocabulary terms as answers, not questions. BAD – What was the 14 th amendment? (which can be answered many different ways) GOOD – What law declared former slaves to be citizens with full civil rights in 1868? ANSWER – 14 th Amendment Question Card

OTHER BAD QUESTIONS Who was Henry Clay? What helped slaves after the Civil War? Where did the Civil War end? Why didn’t some people want to secede? What happened in 1865? Who ran for president in 1868?

The act of fighting. When players have “engaged in battle” there is an exchange of points. If you are asked a question and get it wrong you must give up a provision… If you are asked a question and get it right you must be given a provision… If you are asked a question and get it wrong and have no provisions you must surrender your life and you are no longer in the game.

BATTLES There will be three battles: 1.The First Battle of Bull Run (Manasses) 2.The Battle of Antietam 3.The Battle of Gettysburg

Battles continued … Every battle will have 3 attacks. Soldiers will be engaged with three different opposing soldiers in each attack, asking one question to each. After each attack, soldiers will meet with their regiments to:  discuss questions and answers  distribute rations among soldiers  create more questions

How to be smart and win the war. Study the material!! Read the sections of the text your teacher has assigned. Work together in your regiments to develop good questions. Make sure to communicate with one another after engagements. Prepare for battle!

Who’s Who? TEACHERUNIONCONFEDERACY REDDIG21, 3, 4 BENFIELD1, 3, 42 HON3, 4

Why WIN? BRAGGING RIGHTS! because you have a passion to LEARN!

GOOD LUCK SOLDIERS!
